When the action behind the talk is real you support one another. Dallas has an opportunity to really be the change it’s needs to see. There are people running in this race that have put in more ground work than elected officials and care more about the community. When we say community matters, it means that we are willing to put it first at all times and build a table with the community before we bring in new people to a table that was never built for us to eat off of. It is time to stand up and against the same “perfect “ looking people who look and sound the same while we expect different results. It is time for us to die for something different and get better results. come on Dallas and stand up for progressive and inclusive leadership.

It’s our first in person forum tonight. Come out and meet the candidates. Let’s talk.

After a great forum for district 4 at please head on over to freeman’s cafe to meet the best candidate for district 2. She’s been in the community for years fighting for equity and real progress in our city. She is the only progressive on the ballot and the only real grassroots organizer. If you are in district 2 please check her out and make this a priority. She’s amazing.

Come out tonight and meet the candidates for district 4 in our first in person forum at Pan African Connection.
I want to make a slight clarification to my about section. I was once the chief of staff of next generation and I am the co founder of a non profit that was started when I was 19. I do my work through many organizations and advocate for racial equity and access for all in and around Dallas . I am running on a platform of placing the people first and being community lead. This means that creating a table for and by the people vs. sitting high and looking low. I am the candidate fighting for real affordable housing, public safety that works for us and not against us( getting back to community policing), pandemic relief, and equity and access for all. I want district 4 to be a place that people love to live as well as love to visit. I am for revitalization but without relocation. This gives us the opportunity to build up and take pride in what we have before we discuss bringing in big business. Making sure that we set a standard and protection for our residence so they can enjoy the benefits of living in a growing and thriving community. Please come out and hear more from me as well as the other candidates to see whom you think is truly the candidate for you and your family.

I apologize it has taken me this long to post this because there is still an investigation going on and honestly I’m hurt that I even have to make this post but it’s necessary. On Saturday a great friend of mine came out to block walk with me. While we were talking to a group of friends, he leaves to get money from the ATM. We stayed for about another hour and he never returned. I assumed he had left and was waiting to hear back from him. He finally calls and this is what I see. My once healthy walking friend laying in a hospital bed with two broken ankles and a neck brace. I was in pure shock to find out he had to search for a ATM, then when he found one in broad daylight some young kids attempted to steal his car. Upon trying to get it back he was ran over and both ankles where broken.

There is so much that went wrong in this situation.
1. A Dallas police officer rode past him on the ground screaming for help.

2. A regular citizen ram then kids down and got the car back as the boys jumped on the train.

3. It took the woman coming back for him to actually get some help.

What do we do from here and what are the solutions?:

This is a problem is our community. Carolyn King Arnold proposed a “Dallas 360 plan” or something like that. This was supposed to bring more police in and help keep down crime. The problem with this is They are great at picking up people for petty crimes (under 2 ounces of w**d, tags, speedy tickets), poor people crimes; yet only 13% of the people being taken in are actual violent criminals. This has gotten us a flood of officers that will stop you for something petty but ride past someone in need.

On top of that our kids have no outlets. No where to truly enjoy their time so they are out doing stupid things. We have programs like For Oak cliff that are amazing but why hasn’t our city government connected with them on expanding to different parts of Oak Cliff to service all of our youth? Where are the skating rinks, movie theaters, parks that actually service our youth and their interest? There’s a new deck park being built and non of the community is truly being involved in the process. They are so quick to build better that pushes us out but won’t work with what we have to make it better. Every time the poor get pushed out crime increases and more people are effected. Instead of taking from us to build better for gentrifies, let’s actually build up our Community so that these PEOPLE can have a better life that they deserve. Stop letting a few bad apples get the entire community thrown out and let’s create real solutions.

1.Outlets for our children
2. Build up our community organizations
3. Get the community more involved (educate them on why it’s important for them to get involved
4. Vote for leadership that does not sit high and look low but that actually cares and is of the community.

To help educate and inform our residents about the Candidates in the race for District 4 Council seat, OPENA asked each of the candidates to provide us a short bio so we can learn more them. Here is the bio on Lelani M. Russell who will appear in Place 2 on the May 1 ballot:

Lelani Russell In Her Own Words:

Lelani Russell is a Single Mother, Community Leader and Activist. Although she is referred to as an activist. It is the actions fueled by passion and purpose that make her activism most meaningful. From her time collaborating with “The Feast of Hope” campaign to feed residents of the Glendale community in Oak Cliff. Her participation as a member of Generation Progress’ National Leadership Council. To her role in providing a vital voice of support for the students at South Oak Cliff High school revitalization project.

Dallas native Lelani Russell has found herself heavily involved in “being the change she wants to see”. Leaving her footprint all over the city of Dallas and she now has plans to increase her reach and positively impact one of Dallas’ most underserved areas, as an elected city official for district four. She understands that talking points via protest and the many speaking engagements that she has been booked for are a segue to the groundwork that she has achieved alongside the Next Generation Action Network. Serving as Chief of Staff from 2015-2016.

During this time Russell was featured in Dallas Weekly Magazine’s Top Twenty Millennials. Serving and leading are acts that come second nature to Russell. What is most impressive is that she discerns when to serve and when to lead masterfully. It is her wisdom that guides her in planting herself in places and positions that allow her to make the biggest impact.
Russell is keenly aware of how significant it is to put one’s feet to pavement and put action behind her words.

One would say that Russell is walking the path that was always a part of her plan. Being given the guidance and direction at a young age that opened her eyes and mind to the need for community change through community involvement. As a teen she took a path unfamiliar to many of her peers, by becoming an activist. It matured her, most of all it was the catalyst to future endeavors such as feeding the homeless and battered women, through her non-profit organization Helping Hands and Healing Hearts. As well as serving as a mentor to local youth. To her vision for change today, ratifying the scarcity of food options in her area, bringing forth solutions of revitalization that are community driven. In addition to her efforts to bring solutions to those most impacted by the pandemic, through various relief projects with local
organizations.

The single mom of one is dedicated to speaking for the voiceless. Russell understands the need to have a seat at the table, as a decision maker (if she wants to really make an impact) she believes that it is her duty to serve the city in which she grew up and the community in which she lives and raises her young daughter. As she has firsthand experience as it relates to what is going on in the community and the challenges that are before her. Yet, she forges on resiliently with one of her favorite quotes in mind. “For every dark night, there’s a brighter day”.

Please make sure to attend our D4 Candidate Forum on Tuesday April 13 at 6:30 pm to learn more about Lelani Russell's vision for District 4!

When it comes to leadership one should always lead by example. Over the years Lelani Russell has shown just how much she is willing to do for the community. Stop waiting on people that look the same to do something different and vote for the real change you want to see in your community.

As a candidate truly for the people I am asking the people to get behind me and help me be the voice they've been needing. I am asking for all of my followers and supports to pledge $25 or more to help me reach my goal . This money will be used for yard signs, shirts, mailers, LIT, and to help those willing to get out here and help me work. Donations of $50`or more will receive a free shirt, just comment your size with your donation. I am so appreciative of this opportunity and I will and am putting my best foot forward to be the change our city needs to see. I am a candidate for district 4 but I promise to be a councilmember for all of Dallas.

A lot of people ask me why I'm running. There are so many reasons I have decided to run, but the main reason is the lack of leadership in Dallas. I would love to be 27 and just enjoy life, but how can you enjoy life when the "leadership" is allowing us to be killed at mass numbers. Two weeks ago many people died due to PREVENTABLE circumstances. This horrible grid failure happened 10 years ago and the City knew it could happen again if they were not proactive and nothing was done. Then there was lack in being reactive when it actually did happen again. They opened recs for people to get water but if you had no way of getting there or even containers big enough for the water you were SOL. How about those not on social media because their lights were off? How were they even supposed to know anywhere had water? How about the current incumbent in District 4, a fellow black woman that I should be looking up to trying to shut down warming stations because of pettiness and jealousy. South Oak Cliff high school was a warming station through the storm and has been a vaccination site to help through this pandemic. It is has been the center of so much change in our district the past few years.

Two weeks ago many died in a week long snow storm and now here we are back in harms way. The governor wants to open up our world when not even a week ago my brother buried his God father due to COVID-19. They are literally killing us and those that look like us (black and brown people), that we put our trust in are letting it happen. Carolyn King Arnold is allowing a "beer and wine" store to open up down the street from South Oak Cliff high school while asking to get the same school shut down as a vaccination site. Her priorities behind closed doors show that she could care less about our future and more about profit. Do not allow her to continuously fail us. You have a chance to make a difference by letting it be known her tactics. While she's mad at those running against her, she is placing her constituents at risk of death. This is why I'm running. I will not be running a campaign to bash, but to inform you all. I have always advocated for the people, whether they vote or not. This is not politics , its common sense and common decency.
