Memorial Day Isn’t Just a Day Off — It’s a Wake-Up Call to Honor What Matters

Let’s be real. Memorial Day isn’t about BBQs and sales. It’s about the lives lost fighting for a country that’s far from perfect, but still ours. No, I don’t know anyone personally who died in service. But that doesn’t mean I don’t owe them my respect.

Every flag I see, every moment of silence, reminds me that freedom isn’t free. It’s paid for by people willing to risk everything—sometimes their lives, sometimes their sanity. They didn’t do it for recognition or medals. They did it because they believed in something bigger than themselves. That’s hard. That’s brave.

This day hits different when you understand that your comfort—your right to speak, to vote, to live as you choose—was paid for in sweat, blood, and sacrifice. It’s easy to forget that when we’re caught up in our daily grind. But ignoring it doesn’t make it go away.

So here’s the brutally honest truth: Memorial Day is about respecting that sacrifice—even if you never knew anyone who made it. It’s about acknowledging that freedom isn’t a given; it’s a gift from those who fought for it. And it’s about asking yourself what you’re willing to do to honor it—whether that’s standing up for what’s right, showing gratitude, or simply being aware.

If you’re tired of feeling disconnected, start by remembering why this day exists. Remember that freedom is fragile. Respect isn’t optional. And living honestly means recognizing what others have done so you can live your life.

The Strait of Hormuz is currently a hotspot for Iran’s oil exports. Since late February 2026, Iran has shipped over 11 million barrels through this narrow waterway, mainly headed for China. China’s the main buyer, with vessels often claiming Chinese ownership or crew to avoid Iranian hostility.

Pakistan’s Karachi tanker transited on March 15, breaking some norms, while Indian LPG carriers Shivalik and Nanda Devi passed through around March 13–14 after diplomatic negotiations. These ships are allowed under strict protocols, but vessels linked to the US, Israel, or allies are blocked.

Iran controls the passage heavily. Ships must follow strict guidelines, avoid hostility, and navigate carefully under Iranian oversight. Since the conflict began, only about 90 ships have successfully transited—an extremely small number compared to pre-conflict levels. The risk of attack or detention is high, and Iran’s leverage here is enormous.

Bottom line: China gets the majority of Iran’s oil, India and Pakistan sneak through under diplomatic cover, and global oil supply remains vulnerable. Iran’s geopolitical power is reshaping energy routes, and the threat of conflict hangs over every ship moving through the strait.

Here’s the real deal. ICE detention centers are a nightmare. Over 3,000 people packed into filthy, noisy cells with no space to breathe. They’re starving, losing weight because the food is barely edible, sometimes inedible. Restrooms and showers are infested with bugs, and detainees are fighting over food just to survive.

Medical emergencies are daily. A man banging his head, a pregnant woman in severe pain with COVID, seizures causing serious head trauma. Emergency calls average almost one a day at Camp East Montana alone. Detainees are suffering in silence, with no proper care. Many are afraid to ask for help, knowing guards are violent, abusive, and sometimes downright sadistic.

And the guards? They’re not just neglectful—they’re sick. One guard talked bets on which detainee would die next by su***de. He paid $500 into a pool, joking about it. Owen Ramsingh, a former detainee, overheard this while contemplating his own su***de. Conditions are so bad, some detainees lose hope. Many become mentally ill or physically ill and get ignored.

This is not some distant horror story. It’s happening now, in the richest country on earth. The system is broken, and the cruelty is ongoing. It’s worse under the current administration. These are human beings, treated like animals, denied basic rights, left to suffer in silence.
