Gov. Katie Hobbs & the Republican-controlled Arizona Legislature return to the Capitol w/a nearly $1 billion problem on their hands. Lawmakers face a steep deficit partly due to skyrocketing costs from a school voucher program expansion. Texas should pay attention.

Arizona’s voucher program started in 2011 as a small program for kids with disabilities and it was expanded repeatedly over the next decade until it became available to all students in 2022. Originally estimated to cost $64 million, budget analysts now say it could top $900 million.

Now that all students can apply for the vouchers, nearly 73,000 students participate. The average scholarship is roughly $9,700 per student & about 75% of the students who got vouchers immediately after the program was expanded had no prior record of attending an Arizona public school.

That suggests that the state subsidies in Arizona went largely to students whose families already were paying private school tuition.

Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs and the Republican-controlled Arizona Legislature return to the state Capitol on Monday with a nearly $1 billion problem on their hands.

Ever since the first legislature was established 400 years ago, the bedrock principle of American democracy is that elections matter and we peacefully handover power to the winner of each election, even when we disagree with them.

January 6, 2021 put a strain on that notion when thousands of rioters stormed the Capitol to intimidate Congress into overturning the election. Over 2,000 people broke into the U.S. Capitol, this attack was a blatant attempt to undermine the will of the people and disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. It was a direct assault on the values and principles that our democracy represents.

The images of violence and chaos that unfolded that day serve as a stark reminder of the need to remain vigilant in the face of threats to our democratic system.

Our justice system responded to the insurrection; more than 1,230 individuals have been charged and 900 convictions have been secured, ranging from misdemeanor offenses like trespassing to felonies like assaulting police officers and seditious conspiracy. Around 1 in every 35 of those defendants were from right here in North Texas.

I was a Texas Capitol staffer in Austin when our nation's Capitol was under attack. Governor Abbott ordered us to be on stand-by in case a Capitol attack happened in Texas, too.

This unprecedented assault on our democratic institutions shook the nation to its core and highlighted the fragility of our democracy.

In Texas, election deniers have been hard at work, pushing destructive legislation that enabled a state takeover of elections in Harris County and another that removed Texas from the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC), the system that improves the accuracy of our state’s voter rolls and prevents people from casting ballots in multiple states. Twice I raised points of order to prevent SB 1070, the bill that would take Texas out of ERIC, from moving forward, but unfortunately, like a zombie, this bad bill that will enable voter fraud in our state kept returning and was eventually passed.

Voting is a fundamental right and where all our other rights stem from. Voting gives us the power to defend our freedoms and have a voice in government. When more people participate in elections, our government better reflects the people who make up our beautiful and resilient state, and we elect leaders who truly represent the people.

I believe that elections should be fair, free, secure, and accessible. That every eligible citizen should be able to easily cast their vote for the candidate of their choice without having to navigate bureaucratic red tape or burdensome voter suppression policies.

In the 88th legislature I proudly defended voting rights and firmly opposed voter suppression tactics in Austin and I will continue that fight into the next legislative session.

By recognizing the significance of this attack and the ongoing challenges to our democracy, we can work towards strengthening our institutions and protecting the integrity of our elections. It is our responsibility as citizens to ensure that the voices of the people are heard and that our democratic ideals are upheld.

Together, we can work towards a stronger, more resilient democracy for future generations. Join our movement at plesafortexas.com.

It is imperative that Texas begins to require insurance companies to provide coverage for this transformative form of care. In the last regular legislative session, Senator Judith Zaffirini and I filed bills that would have done precisely that.

Coordinated Specialty Care is the gold standard in treatment for people who have experienced their first episode of psychosis. It consists of a team of professionals providing care, support, and resources for the person and their loved ones to help them adjust to life with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or some other psychosis-related illness.

The work continues.

A new approach to schizophrenia involves managing early psychosis symptoms and keeping young people in school or jobs. The treatment is effective, but private insurance plans don't usually cover it.

In 2022, I ran for the Texas House and committed to serve Texas families and protect our democracy. Against the odds, our campaign turned a moment into a movement and we won the most competitive seat for the Texas House.

This past session, I went to work and sought to honor the commitments I made to our district—protecting our communities, fixing our grid, expanding access to healthcare, funding public education, protecting voting rights, improving services for our veterans and first responders, and expanding affordable childcare.

I am so proud of the work my staff and I accomplished this past year. We worked across the aisle to pass almost a hundred laws and I was named the Freshman Legislator of the Year by the nonpartisan Texas House Legislative Study Group.

I was the first freshman member to pre-file a bill, HB 733, focusing on health literacy in the state’s health plan. I authored two bills signed by Gov. Abbott, added millions to help children, co-authored or sponsored over 90 other bills that were passed into law during the 88th legislative session, and introduced other critical bills on environmental regulation, public health, responsible gun control, reproductive health, community safety, and public education.

I added a budget rider that added $6.2 million in Early Childhood Intervention benefits for children with disabilities (its first increase in 10 years), expanded access to voting for seniors, championed anti-stealthing laws to protect victims of sexual assaults, and stood up for gun reform.

I am proud of what we accomplished, but our work is not yet done.

➡️ We have the resources to fund our public schools.
➡️ We can protect our children with common sense gun regulations.
➡️ We can expand Medicaid & increase access to healthcare for Texans.
➡️ We can fight to ensure that our state government is working FOR Texans, not against them.

Now is not the time to let up and take a break, we must lean in and accomplish even more. Infighting in Austin has left the legislature stalemated. HD70 deserves a focused legislator to navigate this dysfunction and work to find the solutions Collin County needs to address the issues we face every day.

We have the solutions—now let’s get to work!

Slow to 45 MPH on the North End of Preston Road

This week, we received information that the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has changed the speed limit signs along Preston Road (SH 289) between Legacy Drive and SH 121 from 55 mph to 45 mph. The previous 55 mph speed limit had been in place for almost 35 years. However, due to safety concerns, TxDOT conducted an engineering study, which resulted in the recommendation to decrease the speed limit to 45 mph.

The City Of Plano Engineering staff agreed with this recommendation, and on September 26, 2023, the Plano City Council passed and approved the ordinance to decrease the speed limit. This change is in line with the Plano Police Department's mission to maintain a safe environment that contributes to the quality of life.

Please help us get the word out about the new speed limit of 45 mph along Preston Rd between Legacy Drive and SH 121.

*The officer is not real, but the speed limit is.

When the clock strikes midnight on Sunday and we ring in 2024, it'll be time to close the books on 2023. Our year-end figures for December, the fourth quarter, AND the entire year will be submitted to the Texas Ethics Commission, as well as the media and our adversaries.

I’m fighting to ensure women in Texas are not forced to carry non-viable pregnancies to term or be forced to fly out of state for health care. The Texas Supreme Court’s refusal to allow Kate Cox to obtain an emergency life-saving procedure is a moral failure for our state. That means the voters of HD70 need to elect, and re-elect, legislators like me who can vote to change this heinous law.

Can you chip in $27 to put us in the best possible position to protect women heading into 2024?

✅ We’ll QUADRUPLE MATCH every dollar donated from now until midnight Sunday!

We cannot afford for our opponents to see our year end fundraising and think there is an opportunity for them in HD70.

Please, donate here today: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/plesafortexas?refcode=fb231229&amount=27

During this festive time, may the spirit of Christmas bring joy to you and your family. May you find peace in the twinkling lights, happiness in the laughter of loved ones, and good health to enjoy all the blessings that this holiday season offers.

As we exchange gifts and share delicious meals, let us also remember that Christmas is a time for generosity and compassion, and by extending a helping hand to those in need, we can make a significant difference in their lives.

From my family to yours, I wish you a Merry Christmas and hope for abundant blessings for you and your family.

Last week filing closed for the 2024 Democratic primary and today the Secretary of State has finalized the filers and I can confirm that I don’t have a Democratic challenger. I want to thank my constituents for entrusting me with the great honor of being their Democratic nominee for HD70.

In 2022, our campaign turned a moment into a movement by winning the most competitive seat for the Texas House. Now it's time to do it again!

For the next 322 days I’ll be running the race of my life. This seat is going to be the most competitive and expensive state house seat in Texas legislature.

Will you join our movement with a donation of $7 or more today, so we can work to bring more support for small businesses, fight for increased access to healthcare for millions of Texans, and continue to fight for our public schools?

As we grieve w/ while she attempts to heal from the pain & trauma the State of TX & AG Paxton has put her through during her medical emergency - I would like to introduce you to Katie Talman, an HD70 constituent who’s story I first heard while knocking doors last year.

The thing to remember w/both stories is - WOMEN should have the autonomy to make the most critical decisions about their healthcare. Pregnancy complications are complex & vary from individual to individual. The ability to choose is CRUCIAL to healing from the pain of such loss.💔

Texas should be empowering patients to make choices that align with their values, beliefs, & overall well-being.

By allowing women to make these decisions, we ☑️respect their rights, ☑️support their agency, and ☑️promote their overall health, healing and well-being.
