Please see additional details on the weather outlook from OEM and the NWS briefing below:

Bottom Line
Dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills will continue through Wednesday morning. Wintry precipitation will taper off through the mid-morning, with more significant travel impacts expected for Tuesday morning’s commute from refrozen/compacted snow.

Temperatures and Wind Chills:
Temperatures will stay below freezing for all locations today and Tuesday. High temperatures above freezing are expected on Wednesday.
The coldest temperatures are expected to occur tonight into Tuesday morning with readings in the single digits likely for much of North and Central Texas. Temperatures between 10-15 degrees are forecast from the Metroplex south along/between the I-35 and I-45 corridors.
Dangerous wind chill values as low as minus 12 degrees will occur again tonight. All locations are expected to see below-zero wind chills tonight into Tuesday morning.
Daytime wind chills will be in the teens today and in the teens to low 20s Tuesday.

Snow and/or Ice:
Lake-effect snow will continue across parts of North Texas through mid-morning, especially across the Metroplex.
Treated surface roads have remained relatively ice-free, with slick spots reported on bridges and overpasses.
Snow will continue to accumulate on any untreated surface roads.

When Will Things Improve?
Any precipitation that is on the ground today will remain on the ground into Tuesday.
Snow that has accumulated on roadways will be compacted and melted by vehicle traffic and sunshine later today. Any melted/compacted snow will refreeze into ice tonight. This will result in numerous slick roads Tuesday morning across the region, and more significant impacts to travel.
For areas that do see some melting, any water that does not evaporate on Tuesday will refreeze Tuesday night into Wednesday.
Rapid improvement is expected by late Wednesday morning as temperatures climb well above freezing under mostly sunny skies.

What We Are Certain Of
Exceptionally cold weather will continue through Wednesday morning, with temperatures remaining below freezing for all areas.
At times, expect temperatures as low as the single digits with wind chills near or below zero.
Snow will continue across parts of North Texas this morning, including the Metroplex.
A mix of freezing rain/snow will continue across Central Texas this morning.
Nearly all precipitation will end by midday.

01/15/2024

Winter Weather Update Please see the current updates from our city OEM and briefings for our Winter Weather below.

Weather Update
Lake Effect Snow will continue to impact our area throughout the morning and could produce up to .4 an inch of additional snowfall / wintery mix.
Today will be partly cloudy, then gradually become sunny and cold with a high near 26°F, but wind chill values between –2 and 8°F, and gusts as high as 20 mph.
Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low of around 12°F, but wind chill values between –3 and 7°F. North wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
Travel Considerations: NWS notes that that we will remain below freezing until around 10 AM Wednesday so any precipitation we receive today will continue to be monitored for “sticking”. The good news is that the snow that has fallen is “dry snow”, which helps mitigate travel impacts today however, what does melt today has a high chance of refreezing overnight, which could result in numerous slick roads that will impact the Tuesday morning commute. It is advised to cancel/change travel plans Tuesday morning if possible.

GPISD
ISD Stakeholders are evaluating current conditions to determine impacts on school operations tomorrow.
All athletic practices are canceled for today.

Streets

From City Office of Emergency Management
NWS UPDATE: Dangerously Cold Weather Continues ; Wintry Precipitation Today and Tomorrow

Please see the most recent updates from our NWS partners below.

Bottom Line
Dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills will continue through Wednesday morning. Freezing drizzle will begin as early as this morning with a transition to a wintry mix this afternoon through the overnight hours tonight.

Temperatures and Wind Chills:
What’s Changed? Temperatures have trended slightly colder today, with all locations now forecast to remain below-freezing throughout the day. The remainder of the forecast remains largely unchanged.
Temperatures will stay below freezing for all locations Monday and Tuesday.
High temperatures above freezing are expected on Wednesday.
The coldest temperatures are expected to occur Monday night with temperatures between 10-15 degrees forecast for our area.
Dangerous wind chill values as low as minus 12 degrees will occur again Monday night.
Daytime wind chills will be in the single digits to teens today, and mostly in the teens Monday and Tuesday.

Snow and/or Ice Sunday Afternoon through Monday:
What’s Changed? The chance for any accumulations with this initial round of freezing drizzle is around 10%.
Confidence in precipitation continues to increase, with a 60-75% chance of precipitation now mentioned after midnight Sunday night through Monday morning.
The primary precipitation type will transition from freezing rain to sleet for much of the region Sunday night. Confidence has increased in a full transition to sleet Monday morning.
Freezing rain may be the initial precip type, then transition to sleet.
Even though precipitation rates are expected to remain light, any precip that falls will stick due to the cold roads, bridges, and elevated surfaces. Therefore, some impacts to both travel and infrastructure are still expected.
The greatest travel impacts will be to bridges and overpasses, with less impacts on surface roads. This will make travel deceptively dangerous.
Approximate accumulations:
Ice accumulations - a few hundredths for most areas.

When Will Things Improve?
Any precipitation that sticks tonight through Monday morning will remain on the ground into Tuesday.
With the return of mostly sunny skies on Tuesday, unsheltered/unshaded areas may see some melting.

I want to thank our city Office of Emergency Management on keeping us informed and providing the latest developments.

From OEM:
Please see the most recent updates from the NWS about our weather outlook this weekend into next week.

Bottom Line
Exceptionally cold weather will arrive this weekend and continue into next week. While dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills are essentially a guarantee, details of potential snow/ice impacts are less certain at this time.

Overview
Temperatures and Wind Chills:
An additional strong cold front will arrive Saturday which will send temperatures below freezing Saturday night. Temperatures will stay below freezing until Wednesday. High temperatures above freezing are expected on Wednesday.
The coldest temperatures are expected to occur Monday night with readings in the single digits possible.
Plan for dangerous wind chill values as low as minus 15 degrees both Sunday night and Monday night. Daytime wind chills will mostly be in the teens or lower 20s.

Snow and/or Ice Sunday Afternoon through Monday:
There is a chance for snow Sunday evening through Monday near/north of I-20 with a wintry mix expected south of I-20. Wintry precipitation is now possible for most of North and Central Texas, but coverage will not be 100%.
The best chances of snow will be across the far east/northeast counties of North Texas.
Even though precipitation rates are expected to remain light, any precip that falls will stick due to the cold roads, bridges, and elevated surfaces. Therefore, some impacts to both travel and infrastructure are expected.
Approximate accumulations:
Snow (East of Hwy 287 and north of I-20) - 0.5 to 1” on average, but high end amounts of 1-2” are possible in some areas, particularly in eastern North Texas.
Ice accumulations (Along and south of I-30) - a few hundredths for most areas, but as high as 0.10” for eastern Central Texas.

Since we are still 3 days out from this event, precipitation type, amounts, location, timing, and impacts are still subject to change. These details should be better resolved as we continue to get within range of higher resolution model guidance over the next one to two days.

What We Are Certain Of
Exceptionally cold weather will arrive this weekend and continue into early next week.

At times, expect temperatures as low as the single digits with wind chills near or below zero.

OEM will continue to monitor these conditions and provide updates.
