VWEC is the place to be in 2023! Today, we are proud to announce we will be joining the Comerica Bank family at the BusinessHQ as our new permanent location.

The new location is reflective of the modern, executive decor designed at our original model facility at 4900 South Lancaster, but will provide extended weekday as well as weekend hours to effectively support our programs, and the entrepreneurial ecosystem in South Dallas.

Our new location at the BusinessHQ will support the launch of VWEC's long overdue coworking incubator, which will now combine at least two of our signature programs over a 6-month period.

We will also continue to provide our Financial First Weekend Bootcamp sponsored in part by the SBA's Dallas Community Navigator program.

This is your time to get connected! VWEC will kick off the new year with 2-to-3 local/national client focus groups as we prepare our next 5-year strategic plan, as well as a progressive campaign for our new board of directors.

As we end a very challenging fifth year of service, we are preparing to move full speed ahead into an exciting new year, with new programs focused on access to capital, revenue generation, and helping our clients build their workforce.

Many thanks to our new partners at Comerica Bank for supporting us in our mission to build a sustainable, collaborative community that will continue to empower entrepreneur women associated with the military to scale for success!

National Black Business Month is ending, but our work continues.

Get Connected!

As we closeout National Black Business Month, we salute these Entrepreneur Women of Color Associated with the Military.

As I always say, when we help our entrepreneur women associated with the military become self-sufficient business owners, we strengthen our family structure, as many of them are head of households; we create vibrant thriving communities rich with unique resources; and literally fuel our local and national economy!

Check out the stats below from a recent article about Black Busineses on general.

"Nineteen percent of all employer-based businesses were female-led—but 36.1% of all Black-owned businesses were headed by women. When comparing women-owned businesses of all racial categories, Black (non-Hispanic) women have the highest percentage of ownership compared with men in their racial category."

Black Women are making an impact in the small business arena.

Keep leading the way ladies, we're super proud of you!

Women Veterans Day a time to educate, validate and commemorate women who have served in our military!

Yesterday we validated and commemorated the amazing businesses ran by women veteran entrepreneurs.

Today we educate, did you know about these original restrictions on Women Veterans?

Happy 2022.

Today we extend our appreciation to women who have served in the military.

Our journey to where we are today is truly unique. The door cracked open on June 12,1948, when President Truman signed the Women Armed Services Integration (WASI) Act.

Although changes in the WASI Act where extremely progressive in 1948, it included various restrictions and a challenging journey for Women Veteran to where we are today.

For example:

Although joining the military might have been a great opportunity for men to launch a career and support their families.

The WASI Act outlined:
Women would be denied spousal benefits unless their spouses were verified as unavoidably dependent on their wives for at least fifty percent of their support.

**
Our brothers in arms could start or grow their families while serving their country.

The WASI Act outlined:
Any woman who became pregnant, became the guardian of a child under 18 or married a man with a child under 18 who spent more than 30 days per year in the household was discharged from service.

**
You may wonder why there are far more men in the military than women and think it was because women weren't really interested in serving. The truth!

The WASI Act outlined:
No more than two percent of the total force and the number of women officers could not exceed ten percent of that total.

**
Once women were welcomed into the military, we would assume they had an equal opportunity at career development and advancement. However.

The WASI Act outlined:
Promotions for women officers were capped above paygrade 03 (Army, Air Force and Marine Corps Captain and Navy Lieutenant) and only a limited number of us could serve above that paygrade while none could serve permanently as Navy Captains or Colonels in the other branches. We were barred altogether from Flag and General Officer ranks.

**
As a proud Navy Veteran, our journey was even more challenging.

The WASI Act outlined that:
Woman were banned from serving aboard Navy ships except for transports and hospital ships and aboard any aircraft that could have a combat mission.
-------Ground combat was completely excluded from this legal ban because apparently Congress considered the idea of women in ground combat -- well I think you can assume their thoughts since it took until 2016 to open all military combat positions to women.

**
Nevertheless once you gained your rank in the military you were given the same respect and authority as your brothers-in-arms, right: wrong.

The WASI Act outlined:
Women were also excluded by policy from exercising Court Martial or Non-Judicial Punishment authority over men—which made them ineligible to command any units that were not all-female.

We've come a long way as Women Veterans. We owe honor to those that paved the way for the changes we enjoy today, and those that continue serve.

WOMEN VETERANS: THE PITCH
Saturday, June 11th, 12PM-4PM

MEET PITCH FINALIST
Kelli Mumphrey
Founder/CEO, MilkSpace, LLC
US Navy Veteran

Kelli Mumphrey is a proud United States Navy veteran who recognizes her life as a gift meant to be of service to others. In just two months after transitioning from active duty in 2014, Kelli and her husband received a few unexpected fast pitched curve balls. Kelli and her husband found themselves homeless with a one-year-old daughter sleeping on relatives’ couches and spare rooms, while expecting their second child. Grinding day in and day out, Kelli worked a 9 to 5 as a government employee, while serving as a Navy SELRES drilling reservist at Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth all while trying to be a present wife and a breastfeeding mother.

Always on the go, Kelli found herself in situations where she would resort to pumping and dumping her breastmilk in public restrooms, and in other places she felt were unsanitary, uncomfortable, and inadequate. Frustrated by the lack of access to convenient and sanitary public spaces to express breastmilk while away from her home, in 2018, Kelli created MilkSpace, LLC a business that provided outdoor public space operators and event organizers with a pop-up canopy lactation space to address the gap in outdoor breastfeeding amenity solutions.

In 2019, Kelli experienced two miscarriages. Turning her tragedy into triumph, Kelli took a leap of faith by making a life-changing decision to create her own narrative and entered the world of entrepreneurship full-time! Kelli left the security her government career and created another business, Realize Every Aspiration Can Happen (R.E.A.C.H.) Grant Consulting, LLC using her professional government skill sets to assist non-profits to apply for grants. Despite Covid-19, Kelli was able to continue to operate MilkSpace, LLC but as an e-commerce business with a social impact initiative to serve low-income Black women in their breastfeeding journey with business technical assistance from the Veteran Women’s Enterprise Center and the Dallas B.U.I.L.D. grant.

Kelli’s 2021 participation in the Dallas, Texas Impact Ventures’ Local Entrepreneur Accelerator Program (LEAP) and BIG win with the Veteran Women’s Enterprise Center’s 4BusinessRecovery Pitch competition enabled Kelli to refocus on the original purpose of MilkSpace, LLC, as a mobile lactation service on wheels! Kelli is now hard at work developing her Mobile MilkSpace fleet to be the #1 DFW business in demand to deliver premium mobile breastfeeding solutions for outdoor public space operators and event organizers. Kelli is a proud H.B.C.U. graduate of Virginia State University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication (Public Relations). She has also earned two master’s degrees in Management and Entrepreneurship from American Military University.
