Dallas Morning News Endorses Mayer for Dallas College trustee, District 3
It’s a tough season for elected officials in public education as culture wars distract from bread-and-butter issues. Dallas County voters will find it refreshing to see two good choices on the ballot May 7 for the Dallas College board seat for District 3.

Trustee Dorothy Zimmermann is stepping down. Vying to replace her are Paul Mayer, CEO of the Garland Chamber of Commerce, and Soji John, in-house counsel for Western Digital Corp., a data infrastructure company. Both support the consolidation of the Dallas College system, though they have suggestions on how to smooth out problems with the transition.

Mayer and John have experienced Dallas College from different angles. We ultimately tip toward Mayer for his business network and his insights into the local labor market, which he can leverage to the benefit of Dallas College.

Mayer, 72, has served as the top leader of the Garland Chamber of Commerce since 1989. During his tenure, he has worked closely with the Dallas College system — so much so that the chamber moved its offices to the college’s Garland Center (formerly known as the Richland College Garland Campus) in the 2000s.

Garland, a manufacturing hub, has turned to the county’s community college system for workforce development. The Garland Chamber formed the Dallas County Manufacturers’ Association in 2006 as a result of its partnership with the Richland campus of Dallas College. Thanks to that relationship, companies have received grants for customized training.

Mayer told us that he sees his job as making connections, and he said Dallas College needs to do more to increase and boost connections with employers. He supports the philosophy behind the consolidation and the efficiencies it created, but he noted that the move dismantled employer relationships with individual campuses.

“The implementation needs a lot of work in terms of rebuilding trust with faculty and with communities and with employers quite frankly,” Mayer said. “My employers, they had worked out relationships with these campuses and these programs and they knew how to navigate it, students knew how to get to the support they needed. I think it’s moving back toward that, but it’s going to take a lot of work.”

John, 51, told us that Dallas College is important to him personally, as he was a student who took courses from four Dallas College campuses. He’s an engineer with a law degree from Southern Methodist University, where he has taught as an adjunct professor.

John said he backs the direction of Dallas College to a unified system and wants to guide it so that it does not become too “top heavy.”

“I want to make sure that there’s enough control in the [campuses] to manage their operations and that there’s a good balance between what happens at the division level and what happens at the corporate level,” he said.

We’re glad to see community leaders such as Mayer and John invested in the future of Dallas College. Voters should pick Mayer for his expertise.
