By now, we have all heard about Damar Hamlin's cardiac arrest during Monday nights NFL game. While he had critical care in the minutes after his cardiac event, not everyone does.

70% - 90% of people who go into cardiac arrest in the US die before they get to the hospital because people around them don't always know how to help.

The "Chain of Survival" refers to the chain of events that must occur in rapid succession to maximize the chances of survival from a sudden cardiac arrest. HVFD wants to prepare you to be a link in the chain. You can sign up for our CPR/AED courses by visiting tinyurl.com/3avh7pyb

The next training course is scheduled for February 15, 2023.

Congrats to Sgt. Pittinger, this is well deserved!

Congratulations to Sgt. David Pittinger who was recognized today as First Responder of the Month at the Lewisville Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon. He was recognized by Sue Bowman with Sam Pack Five Star Ford, the sponsor of the First Responder of the Month award.

Sergeant David Pittinger started his career with the Highland Village Police Department on February 5th, 2004. During his career Sgt. Pittinger has been a fundamental part of the HVPDs community policing model's success. He quickly moved through the ranks being promoted to Corporal on February 14th, 2005, and Sergeant on July 7th, 2008.

Sergeant Pittinger has been married for 23 years and has two daughters and one grandson. When not with the family you can either find him in the yard working or on his mountain bike on a trail.

Currently Sgt. Pittinger was chosen out of thousands of Law Enforcement professionals to attend the Command Level leadership course Leadership Command College (LCC). He has completed Module one of three.

Sgt. Pittinger was one of the founders of the TXFallenPD Tribute Event beginning in 2008 as a police bike race honoring the lives of Texas officers killed in the line of duty. Over the years it has grown into a community fundraising event benefiting the Texas Police Chiefs Association's Foundation which provides monetary assistance to the families of Texas officers killed in the line of duty. Honoring those that have died in the line of duty remains at the forefront of our event. Currently, he has helped raise over $350,000 for the Fallen Officer Fund.

During his career, he achieved over 30 commendations. His Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) certifications and training includes Master Peace Officer, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Taser Instructor, OC instructor, Certified Police Bike officer, and Child seat inspector. Sgt. Pittinger currently has over 3600 Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) hours of training.

Some of Sgt. Pittingers Awards are:

2019 Supervisor of the year
2019 Community Service award
2017 Community Service award
2017 Supervisor of the year
2012 Community Service award
2008 Supervisor of the year
2004 Rookie of the year

More lemonade! It’s nice to see our students out during the summer.

Today Officer Foskey found this lemonade stand in front of the Highland Shores Community Center and got a cold glass of lemonade. We love seeing our young HV Citizens earning some extra money and supplying a cool refreshment on these warm summer days.

Who knew donuts had such an amazing history?!?! They aren’t just a stereotypical food for Police Officers!

Did you know that today was National Donut Day? Captain Charlsie from The Salvation Army Lewisville stopped by and delivered donuts for our HVPD Officers. Thank you Charlsie for thinking of us today! Please take a moment to read about the history behind National Donut Day and remember our local Salvation Army if you are ever looking to volunteer or give back to our community.

In 1917, The Salvation Army began a mission to provide spiritual and emotional support for U.S. soldiers fighting in France during WWI. About 250 volunteers traveled overseas and set up small huts located near the front lines where they could give soldiers clothes, supplies and, of course, baked goods. After discovering that serving baked goods would be difficult considering the conditions of the huts and the limited rations, two volunteers – Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance – began frying donuts in soldiers’ helmets. These tasty treats boosted morale and won the hearts of many soldiers. Nicknamed “Donut Lassies,” the women who served donuts to troops are often credited with popularizing the donut in the United States when the troops (nicknamed “doughboys”) returned home from war.

National Donut Day is held annually on the first Friday in June. For this Donut Day, The Salvation Army will celebrate the work of the original “Donut Lassies” by delivering donuts to healthcare workers and first responders across the country who’ve stepped up to protect others during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We love lemonade stands!

Today HVPD Officers visited a lemonade stand on Briarhill Blvd and talked with these young HV residents. If you are out tomorrow and need some lemonade, we heard a rumor that these 2 will be at Highland Shores @ Hillside at noon.

These HV entrepreneurs took there stand to the next level and brought out the snow cone machine and shared a little of their ice cold goodness with Officer Jamieson. Today Officer Ben and Officer Dave started teaching “LETS” at McAuliffe Highlander and everyone is excited about tonight’s National Championship game. It looks like most of the 5th graders agree with Officer Dave and are pulling for UNC tonight. Officer Ben thinks KU has the advantage. Let us know who you are picking tonight with a 👍🏼 for UNC or a ❤️ for KU. By the way, we are teaching character building and not just talking basketball.

Last week while Officer Dave and Officer Ben were teaching LETS in 5th grade at Heritage Elementary they challenged the students with a Community Service Project like they do during every LETS class. Well, these students stepped up in a big way. Not only did 5th grade come through in a big way, they asked the rest of the school to participate and the response was overwhelming. The school as a whole collected approximately 15,000 diapers that were donated to Lewisville - Flower Mound YoungLives to help teen moms in the area. Your SRO’s want to thank everyone for their generosity, it will be remembered for a very long time.

It is December 1st and that means that there are 25 days until Christmas! For the next few weeks your SRO’s will be sharing ways that you can help those in need in our community. If you notice the beards are strong with your SRO’s and that is because Chief Reim has let HVPD officers participate in “Beard it Up” to support Juvenile Cancer Research for the last several years. If you would like to help HVPD raise money for this great cause you can go to the below link to donate. Check back tomorrow for a new way to give and help!
