As an executive, it is imperative that you promote people to appointed ranks based on merit and not personal relationships. If they eventually fail it is your reputation, along with theirs, that suffers.

Does your agency recognize the unicorn? I'm not referring to the mythical animal with the magic horn, but rather as a metaphor for the leader or employee that has strategic vision, planning skills, persuasiveness, and is emotionally intelligent. Just like the unicorn, we've all heard about this person, but no one has actually seen them...or have we?

There are most likely unicorns in your organization. Some organizations are excellent at recruiting and utilizing their unicorns, but in some organizations, unicorns are hiding in plain sight, stagnating underneath conditions or leadership that can not or will not let them thrive.

As a leader in your organization, this might be a good time to examine if you have unicorns in your organization and consider finding ways for them to flourish.

A new report on traffic stops in San Diego revealed that police sometimes treat black and Hispanic drivers differently than white drivers — particularly after a stop has been made — mirroring the findings of other studies from around the country.

There are three kinds of employees:
1) The unreachable
2) Average employees
3) Superstars

The unreachable employee hates everything, only sees the negative in the organization and rejects attempts to motivate them. They are the people you spend most of your energy on and can drain a leader. Luckily, they are only 5% of the work force.

The average employee just wants to do his/her job and go home. They work for the pay check and can be motivated to do more than the minimum if you value them, teach them and correct them properly. They are about 75% of the work force.

The superstar is the employee that gets leaders out of bed in the morning. These people will go the extra mile without being asked to. They are your true believers, the ones who live the organization's values. They need little supervision and simply recognizing their initiative will keep them driving forward through any adversity. It is said that 80% of the work is done by 20% of the workers and it is these superstars who make up that 20%.

So what does it mean when people give up and leave the organization?

When the unreachable leave that is EXPECTED. They might be burned out, might be personally unhappy and blame the job or might have found a job that finally makes them happy.

When average employees leave that is an ISSUE. The issue could be low pay, work hours, changing life priorities or natural attrition.

When your superstars lose faith in your organization and leave there is only one culprit....YOUR LEADERSHIP

What are you doing for your superstars TODAY?
