It is with an incredibly heavy heart that I have to announce that DFW Fish Rescue will be permanently closing.
I am a full time college student doing accelerated study classes, in addition to having a full-time job providing therapy for highly aggressive clients with IDDs, as well as a part-time job to make ends meet, and on top of it all, I am a member of a research lab and I am now preparing to help teach a two day intensive workshop at an international conference. Between the limitations on space that I have in my apartment, as well as the limits on my finances and especially my time, I simply cannot keep this rescue going.
Over the last eight months, I have been slowly giving away the materials and supplies that have been donated to the rescue, providing them to schools and adopters to further education and provide happier environments for the fish that I’ve helped rehome.
I am so incredibly grateful for all of the help and support that I have received over the last half a decade of doing this, and I ask that the community continues to provide this kind of support to one another. Thank you to everyone who has followed this journey so far. Please enjoy these photos from DFW Fish Rescue’s final adoption. These fish and I love you all. Thank you.

IMPORTANT. ADOPTERS PLEASE READ.
I have had an influx of people lately who are unable to answer the minimum necessary questions to be vetted for adoption.
When I ask for your water parameters, please either send me a picture of your most recent water test results, or send me your specific Ammonia, Nitrites, and Nitrates in PPM levels. If you do not have your own test kit at home, please take a water sample to your local pet store and ask them to test your water. You can send me a picture of those results. If you are not familiar with the nitrogen cycle, I cannot adopt fish out to you.

Common answers I get when I ask for water parameters that do not count/are not acceptable:
•”Everything is fine.”
•”Normal.”
•”My pH is good.” (You can include your pH in your test results, but I cannot accept only pH levels)
•”The fish store said it’s fine.” (Many stores, especially big box stores, give inaccurate or unreliable information. I need a picture of the test results to help avoid this potential issue)
•”I do water changes once a month. I don’t tets my water.”
•”I have never tested my water, but my other fish are fine.”
•”I use [blank] filter.” (This is nice for knowing how your tank is filtered, but does not tell me your water parameters)
•”My ammonia is 0.” (I need ammonia and nitrate levels at the very least)
•”I don’t know my parameters. Can I still adopt?” (Not knowing your parameters does not mean you can never adopt, but I cannot adopt to you until you have your test results and they are within safe levels)

As a reminder, your ammonia level should be 0ppm, your nitrites should be 0ppm, and your nitrates should be below 40ppm for most fish in a fully cycled tank.

Hey all! Several people have reached out about donating tanks to the rescue. I really appreciate it, but I do not have any stands for putting additional tanks on, and my storage space is very limited at this time. If you have supplies that you’re looking to get rid of, I recommend checking out local aquarium pages to see how you can benefit individuals in your local community, or checking out your local fish store, such as Dallas North aquarium, Fish Gallery, or Glass Aquatics, to see if they will let you trade those items in for store credit. These stores may also take your fish as well, so if you need to empty a tank out on a timeline, try checking these out first.

MAJOR UPDATES. PLEASE READ.

Hello all! I have moved into my new place and am all settled in. I am now located more centrally to Dallas, near Beltline and Midway Road. This will be the dropoff location if you are bringing fish to me.

I have finished cycling a couple of tanks, with extras in storage. I am now able to take in small community fish, bettas, shrimp, and axolotls starting immediately.
I can also take fish of any type (aggressive or not) that can surivive temporarily in tanks up to 40 gallons if given no less than 72 hours’ notice (since I have to set these tanks up separately).
Fish that are too large (or too many) for the tanks I have will go through the same Direct Adoption process as previously- send pictures and your location, and I will find an adopter to pick up from you.

Moving forward, there will be a few new costs to help me continue to make this rescue possible. These will be donation-based and cover:
•Pickups for fish that I drive to you to get (to cover the insane costs of gas)
•Setting up tanks for fish that are not compatible with the tanks I currently have running (to help with water, electricity, supplies, and physical labor)
•An adoption fee on fish that needed medical care

All of these will be donation-based, so give what you think is fair. This will help me cover the costs of running the rescue. I am also looking for local fosters who are willing and able to COMMIT to fostering fish. I am especially in need of people who can foster large or aggressive species. This will help me cut costs on things like setting up large tanks or additional tanks for isolating aggressive species. If you are interested in committing to fostering and are close to the Farmer’s Branch/Addison area, please send me a PM so we can schedule a brief interview.

Lastly, I am still hopeful that I will be able to eventually have the ability to re-open an aquatic animal shelter in a public location at some point in the future. Right now it is a matter of funding, though, so this will likely be a long way off. (Quick reminder that I’m doing this alone as a full-time college student with a full-time job in healthcare AND a part-time job in research, paying tuition out of pocket).
