IPC News Update FYI

Dear colleagues,

Recognizing the importance of energy for sustainable development, the United Nations in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has devoted Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) to energy - the first-ever universal goal on energy, with five targets on access, efficiency, renewables and means of implementation. SDG 7 is inextricably interlinked to other SDGs and related targets, including those relating to poverty eradication, food security, clean water and sanitation, health, education, infrastructure, innovation, job creation, and the empowerment of youth and women. Access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all is fundamental to realizing the vision of the 2030 Agenda. A shift toward sustainable energy solutions is also essential to the achievement of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. The ambition of the 2030 Agenda calls for equally ambitious means of implementation, including enabling environments, effective institutions, technology cooperation, capacity building, scaled-up financing and multi-stakeholder partnerships to achieve sustainable development.

In this context, the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), serving as the central platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, will undertake the first global review of SDG7 in July 2018, under the auspices of Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). To help provide a solid substantive foundation for the review of SDG7, a global preparatory meeting in support of the review of SDG7 at the 2018 High-Level Political Forum, jointly organized by United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), will be held on 21-23 February 2018 at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand. The global preparatory meeting will help facilitate exchange of lessons, insights and experiences among Member States, UN entities and other international organizations and all stakeholders, and consider challenges and opportunities for accelerating progress in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. This conference is supported by the Governments of Norway, the Republic of Korea (through DESA’s UN Office on Sustainable Development), the People’s Republic of China (through the UN Peace and Development Fund), Germany, The Netherlands, and the European Commission, among others.

The registration for the Global SDG 7 Conference is now open to participation from all stakeholders.

More information about the conference can be found at https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/EnergyConference .

Registration to the Conference (deadline: 15th January 2018) https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/EnergyConference/registration

We look forward to your participation in the conference and working with all of you in preparing for a successful 2018 meeting of the HLPF, under the auspices of ECOSOC.

International Support Network for African Development (ISNAD)

IPC News -FYI

Dear Colleagues:

The International Support Network for African Development (ISNAD-Africa) hereby invites applications for its Mentoring for Research Programme (MRP) from students pursuing various doctoral, master's and bachelor's degree programmes in African Universities. The mentoring programme is being implemented as an initiative of ISNAD-Africa to help Africa raise a new generation of researchers and professionals who will use their knowledge and expertise to facilitate clean energy transition, environmental sustainability and climate resilience in African countries. Successful applicants will be those who will be conducting their research on sustainable energy, environment and climate change topics in their various disciplines (Technology, Sciences, Arts, Law, Social Sciences, Environmental Design and Management, Agriculture, Health Sciences, ICT, among others), therefore, students from all disciplines are welcome to apply. The mentoring programme will help students (mentees) complement the supervisory support they will receive from their institution-based supervisors, among other benefits.

All shortlisted applicants will be opportune to attend a 6-week online training to be hosted by the Clean Energy Solutions Center, Colorado, United States. Upon completion of the training, submitted applications and performances at the online training will be assessed and used for final selection of mentees for the programme. Mentees will be opportune to receive one-to-one mentoring support from experienced researchers and professionals in our Mentors' Community from world-class organisations and institutions such as World Bank, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Chatham House, Harvard University, among international organisations and institutions.

Please see more details about the programme and the application procedure on the website (https://isnad-africa.org/mentoring-for-research/). The deadline for Applications is December 22 (11:59GMT)

We will also like to invite experienced researchers and professionals across the globe with well-developed expertise in all areas of sustainable energy, environment and climate change in all disciplines to join our mentors' community (https://isnad-africa.org/projects/). While our Frequently Asked Questions and Answers for Mentors (http://isnad-africa.org/mentors-faqs) provides detailed information about ISNAD-Africa and the role of Mentors, we will also be happy to provide more information and make further clarifications as you may require.

Organisations and Institutions are also welcome to partner with us on this youth-led initiative. We look forward to reading from you. Thank you.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights turns 70

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights turns 70

Let’s stand up for equality, justice and human dignity

Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December – the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted, in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This year, Human Rights Day kicks off a year-long campaign to mark the upcoming 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a milestone document that proclaimed the inalienable rights which everyone is inherently entitled to as a human being -- regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. It is the most translated document in the world, available in more than 500 languages.

Drafted by representatives of diverse legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the Declaration sets out universal values and a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations. It establishes the equal dignity and worth of every person. Thanks to the Declaration, and States’ commitments to its principles, the dignity of millions has been uplifted and the foundation for a more just world has been laid. While its promise is yet to be fully realized, the very fact that it has stood the test of time is testament to the enduring universality of its perennial values of equality, justice and human dignity.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights empowers us all. The principles enshrined in the Declaration are as relevant today as they were in 1948. We need to stand up for our own rights and those of others. We can take action in our own daily lives, to uphold the rights that protect us all and thereby promote the kinship of all human beings.

#StandUp4HumanRights

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights empowers us all.
Human rights are relevant to all of us, every day.
Our shared humanity is rooted in these universal values.
Equality, justice and freedom prevent violence and sustain peace.
Whenever and wherever humanity's values are abandoned, we all are at greater risk.
We need to stand up for our rights and those of others.
