It's a common misconception that child abusers are strangers. In fact, 90% of child abuse cases involve someone the child already knows and trusts.

Teaching children to identify unsafe behaviors and letting them know it's okay to talk to a trusted adult are important steps in helping keep them safe.

Last week, staff and MDT partners participated in an interactive training focused on a simulated child fatality investigation. The training featured a staged crime scene and allowed participants to sharpen their skills in suspect interrogation, witness interviews, evidence identification, and investigative problem-solving. Team members also explored critical decision-making processes, courtroom preparedness, and collaborative case review through team debriefings. A special thank you to Robert Peters and Crystal Nordby for their expertise and leadership in delivering this training.

Research from Thorn shows that 1 in 4 minors have been asked online to share sexual images, engage in sexual conversations, or participate in sexual activity over the internet in exchange for something of value.

Regular conversations with your child about safe and unsafe online behavior are essential. Focus on helping them recognize warning signs of manipulation, not just “strangers.”

Teach them how to set clear boundaries and encourage them to speak up if something feels uncomfortable.

Red flags may include:

• Moving chats to private platforms (DMs, text messages, Snapchat)
• Asking if they are alone or telling them to keep secrets
• Requesting photos of any kind
• Sending intense emotional messages or pretending to be the same age
