Henk’s European Deli Inc. & Black Forest Bakery is actually the name of this wonderfully quirky establishment, and you really need that many words to describe it. After thoroughly enjoying browsing the aisles of European goodies while I waited on lunch, I’d add “& Specialty Grocer” to the ti...

It is true that I have asked y'all for an awful lot this cycle, but I can't help it if we have so many worthy candidates. Please help me give Lulu Seikaly for Congress one last financial push to help her run through the tape in the race for CD03.

Lulu is going to give a voice to this important Collin County district that has been just another automatic vote for Trump's agenda for far too long. I've walked this district, and as you Planoites know, it's a beautiful, diverse place that needs a representative to match it.

Plus you'll get to see me in a neck brace like Joan Cusack in Sixteen Candles

Texas is a voter suppression state new study shows | The Texas Signal

If another nation conducted elections the way we do in Texas, we'd question the legitimacy of the results

Our population is estimated to be over 30mm, and our total registered voters is less than 17mm. That's not normal. Only a quarter of Texans are too young to vote. The vast majority of the remainder should be registered automatically at the same time as they are issued state IDs, register for school, get a new address, buy a car, or just go on the internet to register. These are all things that do not reliably happen, or happen at all, today.

No one can say exactly how those missing millions of Texans would vote, but you can see from the Republican party's words and deeds that they think a legitimate poll of Texans would go real bad for them.

I tend to think that the great uncounted group of Texans might demand full funding of public schools, expansion of Medicaid, clean air, legal marijuana, criminal justice reform, consumer protection, insurance reform, and living wages. That's just a guess based on how Texans answer polls generally, but it's not a bad way to guess.

And the biggest loss to Texas governance could be the ideas we're not even discussing because we're really not talking to millions of Texans whose voices should be heard.

Texas is a voter suppression state new study shows Voting - The Texas Signal is a progressive media company. Our mission is to build a first-of-its kind media ecosystem in Texas to help get the progressive message out – to give Democrats a media signal. Right now, that signal flickers in and out w...

10/13/2020

By inexplicably popular demand, here are my recs for the start of early voting tomorrow. Have you ever been happier to see the start of early voting?

I'm going to try to go in something like ballot order for a voter living on my block (CD 32, HD108), but I'm going to link to something I previously wrote about the other important state house races all over the state, and I'll add commentary here about congressional races that matter (and that I know anything about).

President:

Joe Biden

I'm not explaining myself. Between here and Twitter, I may have written 3000 words about this already, but more to the point, if you haven't made up your mind to vote for Joe, please don't forget to vote Nov. 4.

Senate:

MJ Hegar

Hegar's resume may not be much, and she got the establishment money and endorsements basically because they think she'll back Schumer.

But check out her website. Nothing makes me want to jump up and down, but it's basically good Texas Dem sh*t. She'll be good.

And remember that Cornyn has been a statewide elected official for like 40 years and 35% of voters don't know who he is. He's supported plenty of bad stuff in the Senate, but he also hasn't done a damn thing with the office. In 24 years. He allowed Trump to wreck our border economies. Years ago, he ran on immigration reform. Today, he enables family separation.

CD 32:

Rep. Colin Allred

Obvs. He did a great job his first term. He brought us a new VA facility. Y'all already love this guy

Other Congressional stuff:

CD 24:

Candace Valenzuela

She's one of my favorite people. Great values. And running against a cartoon villain

CD 23:

Gina Ortiz Jones for Congress

This is a crazy district, and this is the one that was drawn by the courts after the DeLay redistricting. Just in case you thought the courts would help us with redistricting. Anyway, Gina is head and shoulders above her opponent

CD25:

Julie Oliver

Again, wonderful candidate with great values running against a COVID profiteer

Railroad Commission:
Chrysta Castañeda for Texas Railroad Commissioner

This might be the starkest choice INCLUDING the president. Not kidding. Chrysta is an imminently qualified energy lawyer. The Railroad Commission despite its name is the only regulator of the oil and gas industry and its environmental effects. She wants to make it regulate reasonably to preserve the sustainability of the industry.

Her opponent, again not kidding, has been fined and sanctioned by the very regulator he's running to control. It's sickening

Judicial races:

I'm not going to do a thorough analysis of all these cases, but do get to know these extraordinary candidates. I truly love these people. Professionally, I know their work. Personally, I know their warmth and commitment to justice.

But just vote for the Dems. Even if you're a Republican. I'm serious.

Ask any litigation lawyer you trust, trial or appellate, civil or criminal. The state's highest courts (Supreme Court for civil, Court of Criminal Appeals for criminal) have shamed themselves and squandered the prestige, and thus the power, of those courts. The Supreme Court reliably favors 3 groups: insurance companies, corporations, and Republicans. The Court of Criminal Appeals exists for only 2 purposes: uphold convictions and execute prisoners.

This sounds like I'm being dramatic. I'm not. The main thing you want as a litigant or a lawyer when you walk through the door of a court (and I have enormous experience with both) is that it's a level playing field. Appellate courts should not function as partisan entities, and the times when Texas's courts of highest jurisdiction have been such fair venues has been when both Democrats and Republicans have had to work together.

Republican friends, please do your homework. Read the Luther case. Talk to those of us who have to make our living in these courts.

Chief Justice Supreme Court:

Amy Clark Meachum

SCt Pl. 6:

Kathy Cheng for Justice

SCt Pl. 7:

Staci Williams

SCt Pl. 8:

Gisela Triana

Court of Criminal Appeals Pl. 3:

Elizabeth Frizell

CCA Pl. 4:

Judge Tina Clinton

CCA Pl. 9:

Judge Brandon Birmingham

HD 108:

Joanna Cattanach for Texas State Representative HD108

Super easy choice. Joanna's got great values and a great resume, and if Texas hadn't been a leader in voter suppression, she would have won in 2018.

And Morgan is good person and a friend, but he's been down there 2 sessions about as effective as his desk. No bills passed. None with a floor vote IIRC.

Other House races:

https://www.facebook.com/PhilipTKingston/posts/3019416411518739

Edit: just to be absolutely clear, the amazing Dems we elected in '18 should all be reelected.

5th Court of Appeals

Pl. 3:

Judge Bonnie Goldstein Campaignn

Pl. 6:

Judge Craig Smith

Pl. 8:

Dennise Garcia

Dallas state courts:

The Dems are going to win, but they're also the best choices. Vote for them

Dist 14:

Judge Eric Vaughn Moyé

Dist 95:

Judge Monica Purdy

Dist 162

Maricela Moore

Dist 254

KIM BROWN, Democratic Nominee for JUDGE of the 254TH Family District Court

DISD props:

At more than $3B, it's the biggest local bond package in history. In a pandemic. The advocates are still saying that it won't increase your taxes, but those projections are based on pre-COVID tax receipts.

It's just irresponsible, and the facilities it will fund aren't even good. There's an athletics prop that looks really awful. The district is still trying to tear down historic schools. The board is under this spell that it can't get students without shiny, new buildings.

What would help students is teachers who were paid fairly, and one thing that's inarguable is that teacher pay will be constrained by these bond packages
