Each year, cities across the country conduct a Homeless Point-in-Time count in order to provide numbers to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The numbers directly correlate with the funding local nonprofits and the city receive to work with our homeless community members.

In partnership with the Collin County Homeless Coalition and Housing Forward, the McKinney Housing and Community Development Department is recruiting volunteer teams to help count the homeless citizens, offer resources and supplies, and complete a survey.

The Point in Time count will occur 5:30-10:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 25.

For more information and to volunteer, visit: https://bit.ly/48ir4S8

New trash and recycling rates for residential customers went into effect Monday, Jan. 1. The rate increase comes as part of the cityโ€™s agreement with Waste Connections that provides for yearly consumer price index changes associated with increased labor costs and changes to the recycling market.

For residents, basic monthly rates will increase 69 cents to $18.61 per month. For residents who have additional trash containers, the extra container fee will increase 23 cents to $7.16 per month.

The agreement was approved at the City Council meeting on May 4, 2021. To learn more about this rate increase, view the City Council presentation: mckinneytx.new.swagit.com/videos/120343?Mode2=Video

Meet three of the long-timers at Collin County Animal Services:

๐Ÿถ Phoenix is a 2-year-old Shar-pei mix and the sweetest, happiest guy you will ever meet. He loves to run and play with kids.
๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฑ V***n and Cupid are 3 months old and are sweet, playful, and absolutely adorable. These two need to stay together.

Please "paws" before you adopt a pet this festive season. A pet is for life, not just Christmas. Unfortunately, shelters fill up in January. Please think before you gift!

We love our Native Texans, but from a safe distance!

Tips for your safety and theirs:
๐Ÿฆ Do not feed the wildlife human or pet food.
๐Ÿฆ Wildlife may have rabies or other harmful diseases to humans
๐Ÿฆ Feeding them makes them more aggressive, due to loss of natural fear of humans
๐Ÿฆ Feeding them increases potential attacks on people and pets
๐Ÿฆ Affects natural diet leading to health problems
