Republican leadership continues to deny $10 billion of Medicaid funding annually, despite Texas leading the nation in rural hospital closures and over 80% of Texas’ counties federally designated Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs).

This is just one of the many outstanding issues our state is suffering from. Right now, the Texas Legislative Progressive Caucus (TLPC) is hosting open meetings across the state to hear what issue is most important to you. Our next stop is Dallas! I look forward to hearing what you want to see from Texas leadership.

People’s Hearing, Dallas:
Date: Saturday, August 15, 2026
Time: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: Erik Jonsson Dallas Central Library (1515 Young St. Dallas, TX 75201)

Thank you for having me and my colleague Representative Vincent Perez of El Paso on your podcast. To listen to our full conversation visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=

There is no greater emergency to our state than a deficit in public education funding and a deficit in student outcomes.

Texas teachers are paid $8,500 less than the national average, while their pay has also failed to keep pace with inflation. Over the past decade, teachers have lost an average of $5,000 in buying power across all years of experience.

Republican leadership expects our teachers to serve our communities, support themselves and their families, and take on the cost of higher education to meet certification requirements.

Pursuing a career as a teacher has become economically unrealistic and it is affecting our public education. Without meaningful across-the-board pay raises, Texas will continue driving teachers out of the profession and discouraging the next generation from ever entering the classroom.

Dallas lost a dear friend, a fierce grassroots activist, and a beloved community member.

Sylvia Collins was among the victims identified following last Thursday’s gas explosion at The Clyde Apartments in Oak Cliff. Sylvia was someone who showed up, gave her time, used her voice, and poured love into her community.

As a District 23 Precinct Chair, activist, volunteer, and friend, Sylvia made an impact on so many lives, including mine. I’m grateful for her support, and for all her contributions to make our community not only better, but welcoming to all.

My heart is also with all the other victims, their families, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking tragedy. No family should have to experience this kind of loss, and our community is grieving with them.

Thank you, Sylvia, for your work, your love, and your dedication to our community. You will be deeply missed.

Rest in peace, Sylvia.
