Exactly a week ago, Workers United had its Quadrennial and Third Constitutional Convention! The Convention was a success and delegates, alternates, guest and staff emerged from it energized with a NO MATTER WHAT attitude and ready to face the next 4 years united!

This specific convention was extremely special for us, the Southwest Region.

Our beloved leader, Jean Hervey was uplifted and honored during this convention. She was promoted to Executive Vice Present of Workers United. She is the first African American and first woman to hold this leadership.

Her new position expands her reach from Canada to the USA, representing some 80,000 members. Workers United is a labor Union representing workers in a remarkably diverse industries such as, Industrial Laundries, Manufacturing, Food Service, K-12 and Higher Education, Security Guards, Nurses, Janitorial Services and Xerographic.

Please give Jean Hervey a HUGE round of applause! Congratulations Jean, we are so proud of you!

A TIME IN HISTORY!

Black History Month: Ruby Bridges

At the tender age of six, Ruby Bridges advanced the cause of civil rights in November 1960 when she became the first African American student to integrate an elementary school in the South.

Born on September 8, 1954, Bridges was the oldest of five children for Lucille and Abon Bridges, farmers in Tylertown, Mississippi. When Ruby was two years old, her parents moved their family to New Orleans, Louisiana in search of better work opportunities.

Ruby and her mother were escorted by four federal marshals to the school every day that year. She walked past crowds screaming vicious slurs at her. Undeterred, she later said she only became frightened when she saw a woman holding a black baby doll in a coffin. She spent her first day in the principal’s office due to the chaos created as angry white parents pulled their children from school. Many parents withdrew their children permanently. Ruby ate lunch alone and sometimes played with her teacher at recess, but she never missed a day of school that year.

Is Bain's Canada Goose becoming a Sweatshop?: We Support the Immigrant Women Factory Workers at Bain's Canada Goose Fighting for a Union, Fair Pay and Safe Working Conditions

The majority of the workforce in Canada Goose’s Canadian factories in Winnipeg are immigrant women, who during the pandemic have been forced to deal with low piece rates and, without a union, no real say over working conditions. For example, at one plant, broken bathrooms, lack of sanitizer and social distancing have been problems, all while workers continued to produce luxury winter coats, as well as essential PPE for hospitals. Workers describe being treated like an “animal,” and another, as a “slave.” Workers at one plant report that a climate of fear has descended.

A message from our Workers United leadership:

As the disturbing events are unfolding on Capitol Hill, the leadership at Workers United condemns the actions of these domestic terrorists, who clearly show a disregard for our Constitution, and do not reflect the democratic, honorable, decent and respectful nature of the majority of Americans.

We stand with our brave elected officials, who are determined to execute their duties to affirm Joe Biden as the next President of the United States, despite the threats to our democracy by those who continue to perpetuate falsehoods and incite violence.

Stay strong. The truth, your courage, principles, and morality will prevail.
