Mediterranean Diet Can Cut Heart Disease, Study Finds

New research shows that a Mediterranean diet can seriously lower your chance of heart disease. Even though it is high in calories due to nuts, olive oil, and even wine, a balanced Mediterranean eating habit can lower risk by 30%. Plus, it is actually an enjoyable, non-restrictive diet!

http://mf.tt/OYauG

Until now, evidence that the Mediterranean diet reduced the risk of heart disease was weak, and some experts had been skeptical that the effect of diet could be detected.

Fresh Homemade Salsa

A good salsa rich in antioxidants is a great heart-healthy snacking choice when paired with low-fat chips or fresh veggies. When you mix in a can of rinsed and drained black beans, you get a two-for-one special: according to the Mayo Clinic, adding soluble fiber into your diet helps lower bad (LDL) cholesterol. Add a dash of lime juice and a chopped jalapeno for an extra kick that will jumpstart your metabolism.

LOL - Not in an email, not on Twitter or Facebook, but really: laugh out loud! Whether you like watching Family Guy or Seinfeld reruns, if it gets you chuckling, it’s good for your heart. Research from the University of Maryland Medical Center shows that laughter helps relieve the stress that damages the endothelium, the tissue that forms the inner lining of blood vessels and helps your blood flow. It also promotes the healthy function of blood vessels. So don't feel TOO bad when you spend an hour watching funny cat videos on YouTube :]

The Texas Heart Institute-How Healthy Is Your Heart?

This month we will be promoting heart and overall health. Keeping your heart healthy is the best way of preventing stroke, heart attacks, and other heart disease. Your heart is an incredibly hard-working muscle. The heart pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood as it contracts and expands about 100,000 times per day — which is why keeping it healthy is so important. The first step is measuring your risk; use this quick assessment to gauge your overall heart heath as a starting point.

Heart Attack Risk Assessment

It's essential that you measure your risk of heart disease and make a plan for how to prevent it in the near future. Use this tool to help you assess your risk of having a heart attack or dying from coronary heart disease in the next 10 years. It will also check to see if you may have metabolic syndrome, a group of risk factors that greatly increase your chances of developing cardiovascular disease, including stroke and diabetes. This Risk Assessment can be used by people age 20 or older who do not already have heart disease or diabetes. After you have finished using the tool, you can print a copy of your risk assessment results, risk factor summary report, metabolic syndrome assessment and action plans for those areas you need to work on in order to reduce your risk.

Hands Only CPR

In most cases of sudden heart failure, victims aren't getting the lifesaving treatment they need, even when bystanders are familiar with CPR. Why won't people perform CPR on strangers? It turns out that most people are afraid of doing it incorrectly or inadvertently harming the victim further. Some people, however, may even fear they'll contract an infectious disease if they perform CPR on a stranger. Even though there have been no documented cases of anyone catching a serious disease from performing CPR, the new recommendation of hands-only resuscitation offers an alternative that should help assuage any fears a person may have about the practice.

Hands-Only CPR can be just as effective as conventional CPR. Learn what Hands-Only CPR is and how to give it.

Here are 5 great reasons to learn CPR:

-You might save someone’s life.
-You may save the life of someone close to you. 80% of cardiac arrests happen at home.
-You’ll be smarter. By the end of your class, you’ll know more than you did when you started.
-You’ll be more confident. You’ll know exactly how to react when someone is having a heart attack.
-You get to use cool life-saving technology! Part of CPR training now includes how to operate an automatic electronic defibrillator. Most states require an AED device in all public places; in time of need, you may be the only person in the room who knows how to operate it.

Just a few hours of your time could save countless lives! Take the first step and register for a CPR class.
