Cheshire Fire Department

Last night at 8:06pm the department was dispatched to a residence on Lakeshore Drive for a reported fully involved house fire with propane tank explosions. The first due engine company reported heavy fire showing from an RV that was parked directly next to a residence. The residence was also on fire as a result of the fully involved RV. Crews commenced an exterior attack then transitioned to limited interior attack due to the structure being unsafe. Several propane tanks did explode while firefighters were battling the blaze but fortunately no one was injured in this fire. The resident was able to make it out unscathed. The fire was investigated by Chief Francesconi as well as a Trooper assigned to the Massachusetts State Police Fire Investigative Unit. This fire was not deemed suspicious and appears to be the result of a mechanical malfunction. Members were on scene until 3am this morning. Chief Francesconi returned to the scene early to complete the investigation.

The department would like to thank the following agencies for their response to the fire scene last night and their help extinguishing this blaze. The Cheshire Police Dept, Adams Fire Dept, Lanesboro Fire Dept, Savoy Fire Dept, the Dalton Fire Dept as well as the Adams Ambulance Service for providing a crew to standby to make sure we were all safe. Also thank you to the utility crews that responded to make sure all utilities were off. A special thanks to Adams Asst Chief Dave Lennon, Lanesboro Fire Chief Charlie Durfee and Dalton Fire Chief Gerry Cahalan for their response and assistance at the scene. This collaboration truly shows the essence of teamwork and volunteers coming together from different agencies to keep people safe and mitigate risks 24/7 365 days a year.

Chief Francesconi would like to especially thank the members of the Cheshire Fire Dept who volunteer selflessly every day and put their lives at risk to protect the citizens of Cheshire. They put their lives on hold to leave their families and respond to strangers emergencies. Thank you for your dedication to the department and the residents of Cheshire. And all for no paycheck and no benefits. That kind of dedication is second to none.

Greetings everyone, as you might have noticed it is a little windy outside today. Pretty sure we just witnessed a man flying his dog down the street, pretty sure he was trying to walk it but it was a little dog and he caught some air. (Just a Joke!!) But seriously Winds are toppling 🌲🌲 and bringing down power lines with them. ⚠️ Always stay away from downed wires and assume they are live. WE ALWAYS ASSUME ALL POWER LINES ARE LIVE, until our friend's at Eversource arrive and confirm they are dead. If those are the precautions that we take then YOU should as well. If you see a line down call for help and NEVER attempt to approach or move it. Have a great Monday everyone!!!

Congratulations to Ret. Deputy Chief Michael Polidoro (PFD), on the honor he received today!!

Today we honored a true PFD legend, retired Deputy Chief Michael Polidoro, with the official unveiling and dedication of Engine 6 as "Poly's Pride." Surrounded by immediate family, his PFD family, Father Peter Gregory and city dignataries, we dedicated the Holmes Road engine company in his name. Through his 28 years of dedication and hard work in the PFD, he proudly earned the nickname Iron Mike. He was instrumental in the design, purchase and delivery of this 2016 Seagrave engine near the end of his career. Desite being forced into retirement in 2016 due to ALS, DC Polidoro continues to be an inspiration to all of us here at PFD and his legacy will respond 24/7/365 out of our Holmes Road station.

Some very useful safety tips in this post from our fiends in South County. Stay warm everyone!!

After another let-down of a snowstorm for those that love the magical stuff, we have the polar vortex - AKA Winter - working into the area. Dangerously cold air is coming, but you can expect that around here a couple times a year - we just hope it is not in July.
Because of the severity in the mid-west (it won't be that bad here), the media is getting all excited about the approaching polar vortex, painting a picture of death and doom, people freezing solid as they walk to their cars, abominable snowmen throwing spears of ice through your windows and so on. It is being dubbed the sequel to Birdbox - Winter winds...
Although it is a dangerous cold, common sense will go a long way. Kids and pets, you probably should let them inside, as much as it may stress you out - but that's what wine is for, in moderation of course. If you do have to go out, bundle up. Jacket, hats, mittens - all a good idea, and pants. Don't forget pants, shorts probably won't cut it. If you have a space heater and you are chilly in your house, be smart about it. Keep it clear of flammables and never leave it unattended. Blankets have also been known to help keep you warm and cozy, as have sweatshirts. This is the Berkshires, we can handle cold and we will survive. For additional cold weather tips a quick Google search of cold weather safety may prove beneficial.
Be warm, be smart, be safe, and call us if you need us, we'll be here for you.

With the recent snowfall and frigid temperatures we kindly remind you to please do the following:

-Ensure that fire hydrants near your house are cleared in all directions and visible.

- House numbers are clearly visable from the road.

-Ensure all vents around your house are clear.

-Ensure that all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are tested and functional.

-Ensure that chimneys, stoves, and heating sources have been properly cleaned and serviced for use, and that electrical heat sources are in a safe location and not connected to power strips.

-Please, check on your neighbors, and ensure they have adequate heat, food, and water.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: WHAT DO WE NEED: Dedicated people with a sense of commitment and willing to make a difference in the town that you live in -DALTON. A person that can work with others and think on their feet. A person that can drop everything in a moments notice to assist those in need. A person willing to get educated and further all your knowledge to protect the town you live in as well as pass the knowledge to others. Student, Trainee, Mentor and eventually Chief. If you possess most of these qualities, please read on. DEFINITION OF VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER - Legally enrolled firefighter under the fire department organization laws who devotes time and energy to community fire service without compensation other than Worker's Compensation or other similar death and injury benefits. WHAT WILL I BE DOING: You will be performing the roles of firefighting, same as those that are paid. What does this entail you ask? Building fires as well as fires of all sorts, alarm call, public service calls, ie: Lift assists, lockouts, etc.., Motorvehicle crashes, All Hazards on a broad spectrum. (Too much to list here) I WHAT DO I GET FOR VOLUNTEERING: "A long tiring day and night that you will get yelled at for by your loved ones and bosses in which also inflicts muscle pain and sleeplessness. " OK Sarcasm people!! Seriously my answer: You become a part of a tight knit organization with an unbreakable bond. You gain a self sense of achievement and accomplishment with every call that you (Yes You) make a difference at. You get to project the knowledge of your trade, if you have one and show off your special skills in an environment that has little borders. You have the chance to become history while upholding history. You also have the opportunity to advance and become an officer and senior officer and then make the life changing decisions. You also have the chance to make decisions to build, continue and change your department for the better. You can make a difference!! DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR MY TURNOUT GEAR AND UNIFORMS: Answer: The required and standard issued uniforms, NO. Can you buy the best and add on, Sure. If interested, send a letter of interest to the Dalton Fire Department. Sad to say this, but: SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY, This isn't for everyone. " Our ranks are getting aged, time for the new blood" “Wherever you turn, you can find someone who needs you. Even if it is a little thing, do something for which there is no pay but the privilege of doing it. Remember, you don’t live in the world all of your own.” ~Albert Schweitzer
