"Fewer than 3 in 10 graduates in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are women. And barely 1 in 10 actual engineers are women. Early in a girl's life, the toys marketed to her are usually things that don't encourage her to enter those fields. GoldieBlox intends to change that by teaching them while they are young that these fields can be fun — and apparently epic, by the looks of this super-genius 2-minute video. Watch and learn."

Blood clots that lead to heart attack and stroke can be hard to detect until it’s too late. A new test uses nanoparticles to detect levels of thrombin, a blood clotting factor, in a patient’s urine.
Certain patients, based on lifestyle or medication, are at greater risk for developing clots. A noninvasive test could allow physicians to monitor these patients before the clot breaks free, causing severe damage.

Tomorrow (Wednesday 10/16) UMass President Caret will be visiting the MAB center in Fall River. The MAB center is a bio-manufacturing center. We are planning to go and are looking for around 10 members to come with us. This is a great opportunity to see bioengineering outside of academia. The visit will take place from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM. Send us an email tonight if you are interested.
Also, on the 24th of October at 5:30 PM, there will be a seminar in Boston hosted by the Boston BMES chapter. The seminar's focus is on medical device innovation. We could organize a car-pool, or if need be we could get a party bus.
We are just about half way through the semester guys, I can almost taste the candy canes.
