Mike Jones, a small buisness owner from David City, has filed for election to the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. Jones, 61, is a lifelong Nebraskan, graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with both bachelors and masters degrees in education, and leader in community and state organizatio
ns. He filed his candidate paperwork with the Secretary of State on March 1 to place his name on the May 15 primary ballot. Mike and Joanie, who have been married 36 years this May, started Jones Insurance Agency in David City in 1989 and have grown the independent insurance business to eight locations with twenty-nine employees including offices in David City, Seward, Beatrice, Nebraska City, Grand Island, Kearney, York, and Rockport, MO. Prior to working in financial services, Jones taught science and coached high school athletics at Winside and David City. Joanie received her bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska College of Nursing in 1975. "The University has given so much to me, my family, our community and our state, and I want to return the favor and commit to serve on the Board of Regents to represent alumni, taxpayers, communities, and current and future students, all of whom have a stake in the future of the University. A strong and vibrant University contributes to strong and vibrant communities, including and especially our rural communities." Mike Jones was born and raised in Stratton, Nebraska and moved to Lincoln to attend the University of Nebraska. After graduating with his bachelor's and master's degrees in education, Mike taught and coached at Winside, Nebraska where he met Joanie. Mike and Joanie were married and settled in David City where they have lived for 36 years. Mike Jones is an active memeber of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in David City (past board member); Davd City Chamber of Commerce (past president); Butler County Chamber of Commerce; Masonic Lodge #51 (past Grand Master of Masons of Nebraska, 2002); and, the Nebraska Big I Board of Directors. He is a past member of David City Rotary Club; Davd City High School Booster Club; Butler County Area Foundation; Future Generations Health Care Foundation of David City; David City Chamber Ambassadors; Business & Industrial Development Corporation of David City; State Educational Commitee of Certified Insurance Counselors (past chairman); and Legislative Commitee of Nebraska Big I. Mike is a registered Republican. Mike and Joanie have three grown children and two grandchildren. Son Grant Jones lives in Beatrice with his wife Nicole and their daughter Madeline. Daughter Dr. Stephanie Jones lives in Omaha. And, daughter Greta (Jones) Shanahan lives in Lincoln with husband Seth and their son Raiden.
