Meet Jennifer Velasco, our Holocaust Survivor Assistance Program Supervisor 👋

Here's a little bit about Jennifer in her own words:

"What I enjoy most about working at Goodman JFS is the work we do helping people in our community, specifically Holocaust survivors. We are able to help them remain in their homes longer and contribute to their positive quality of life. It’s more than a job because you can actually see the difference being made in people’s lives, particularly when we are their only or main resource available.

What sets Goodman JFS apart is the high regard we have for each other’s well-being and for all of our clients, who are known by their names and not just as another file. We constantly strive to help more people while also making sure we take care of each other. It’s a very positive and supportive working environment.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending quality time with my husband, our loved ones and our three cats. I love reading fiction, mystery and psychology books, writing, yoga and getting out of the city. A dream of mine is to open and run a pet rescue one day. At the very least, I hope to foster animals and adopt more of them. 🐱

💕 Fun fact: Many of my colleagues may already know this, but my husband and I are expecting our first child, a little girl!"

It can affect working families, older adults, veterans and people who never imagined they would need help. And while Hunger Action Month puts a spotlight on food insecurity each September, the need continues all year long.

For our latest Ask the Experts, Ross Adel, Operations Director of our Dorit & Ben J. Genet Cupboard, shares what food insecurity looks like in our community, what it takes to serve approximately 600 families and how something as simple as a Sunday morning bagel can provide more than a meal.

As we look toward the High Holidays, we’re thinking about what hope can look like in our community.

Sometimes, it’s food on the table when money is tight.
A safe place during a crisis.
Someone to talk to when life feels overwhelming.
Help navigating an unexpected challenge.

And sometimes, hope is simply knowing you have somewhere to turn.

Every day, Goodman JFS is that place for individuals and families across Broward County.

“Most of us don't have the time and energy to be literally on the front lines when people are in crisis. Supporting Goodman JFS is a way of supporting first responders in the crisis area.”

Lauren and Alan Cohn have supported Goodman JFS for nearly 30 years, beginning when Alan first served on the Board of Directors.

“When I grew up, I was taught that some of the problems Goodman JFS clients have, such as food deprivation and spousal abuse, were not problems Jewish families have. But then I saw that I was taught incorrectly. Jewish people have the same problems that the rest of society has.”

One experience from Alan’s early Board service has stayed with him. A woman came to us after her boyfriend had severely injured her face.

“We raised the money for the plastic surgery she otherwise wouldn't have received. That meant a lot to me. I know and have seen the impact of what Goodman JFS does.”

Over the years, Alan has also seen the importance of having somewhere to turn when a person does not know where to begin.

“Goodman JFS is many times the first call that people make when they have no idea who to call and where to go. Goodman JFS always gets people to the right place, whether it's internal or with another organization.”

Thank you, Lauren and Alan, for nearly three decades of support and for helping Goodman JFS be there when someone in our community needs somewhere to turn. 💙

After losing everything he owned in a mobile home fire, a veteran in his 80s came to Goodman JFS overwhelmed and unsure ...

After losing everything he owned in a mobile home fire, a veteran in his 80s came to Goodman JFS overwhelmed and unsure how he would rebuild.

Even in the middle of an incredibly difficult situation, his personality quickly came through. He had our staff smiling with stories about Jackie Gleason golf tournaments, his powder blue convertible in the 1960s and serving in the Army during the Elvis Presley era.

With limited income and few resources to start over, he needed support finding a path forward. Goodman JFS helped him secure temporary housing and, within a few weeks, move into an apartment close to his daughter.

We also helped him begin rebuilding what he lost, providing furniture, clothing, toiletries, linens, kitchen supplies and other essentials.

Now he's settling into his new home and making it his own. One of the first things he did was visit local thrift stores to pick out toys so his grandchildren would have something to play with when they come to visit. 💙

Goodman Jewish Family Services mourns the passing of Pearl Goodman, a cherished member of our JFS family whose generosity, compassion and commitment to our community helped shape the organization we are today.

In 2014, Pearl and her husband, Stanley, made a transformational gift to our agency—an extraordinary expression of their belief in our mission and in the importance of caring for those in our community who need us most. In recognition of their generosity and enduring commitment, our agency proudly became Goodman Jewish Family Services of Broward County.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Goodman family and all who knew and loved Pearl.

May Pearl’s memory be for a blessing, and may her extraordinary legacy continue to inspire us for generations to come.
