DCCB staff had a fun Monday morning helping the DNR, Nature Conservancy, and Drake University band geese at Little River! Banding the geese allows DNR Biologists to keep track of s*x and age of the geese, their migration patterns, and if they return to the same areas. Lots of the geese on Monday had bands from previous years!

I think these kids have a pretty good chance at surviving in the wild after this camp! 🩹🌿🧭🪢🏕️🔥

We spent the day learning all sorts of survival skills. We started off by making mini survival kits, which came in pretty handy throughout the day.
Then we went on a hike to learn about edible and dangerous plants, learned to use a compass and play an orienteering game, practiced knot tying, built a shelter in the woods, tested out our fire making skills, and finished the afternoon with s’mores!

Today was all about Slithery Snakes! 🐍

We read a story about not being afraid of snakes and looked at a picture book of a snake camouflaging itself throughout the story. Then the kids got to learn about snakes by meeting and touching Arlo the corn snake. For our activities, we went on a snake hunt, colored paper plate snakes, made rattle snakes, and blew bubble snakes!

Today was for the birds! 🦅🦆🦃🦉🪶🪽🐦‍⬛🪺

We decorated birding notebooks, learned about owls and made owl calls (video coming soon 😆), played bird call bingo, learned about different beaks and tried out the tools that represent each beak type, made hummingbird feeders, learned about bird eggs, went on a birding hike where we heard and called in tons of birds, learned about raptors and made talon keychains, and ended the day with a worms in dirt snack! 🪱

Today, in one word, was WILD! We made so many nature art projects today 🎨🖼️🖍️🌿🌧️🐍

We started the morning by making suncatchers with glue, beads, and sooooo much glitter! Then we got to meet Arlo the corn snake and made snake pots out of clay. We also made rain clouds by melting blue crayons between wax paper. After that, we made flower bookmarks, went on a hike and did nature printing, and cut out pictures to make nature collages. We ended the afternoon by decorating sugar cookies with our “paint pallets” with different colors of frosting!
