Voters turned out in record numbers to make their voices heard at the ballot box. LWVVC members have been volunteering at the polls in a variety of capacities and report that the election process was well organized, efficient, and transparent. Because of the large number, it will take time to complete the process of counting all ballots. Democracy is worth waiting for. As we wait for votes to be counted, we know that this waiting period is exactly what should be happening. Election officials are working around the clock to count an unprecedented number of ballots, and it’s essential that they take the time to make sure every vote is counted. Remember: a complete and accurate ballot count is more important than a fast ballot count.

Constitutional amendment 4 would make it easier for well-funded corporate interests to overturn the will of the people. LWVVC opposes this amendment.

Amendment 4 in 2020 would add more burden to an already challenging process for FL citizens to exercise direct democracy and amend their state’s Constitution. This is a clear effort to suppress our voting power.

If you have not yet returned your mail-in ballot, LWVVC recommends that you hand deliver it rather than mailing it. Mail-in-Ballot mailboxes are located at every early voting site from 7am to 7pm through November 1. After November 1, hand-deliver your mail-in-ballot to the Supervisor of Elections office prior to 7pm on election day. Ballots received after 7pm on Nov. 3rd will NOT be counted. Mail in ballots will not be accepted at polling locations on election day they must go directly to the Supervisor's office. Voting by mail is safe and effective in Volusia County. Thanks Patricia Drago for volunteering your time at the canvassing board sessions and for bearing witness to this legitimate process.

Volusia County voters can be very confident that their mail in ballots will be counted. As a member of the League of Women Voters of Volusia County, I observed the mail in ballot process in DeLand, over two days this month.

Dark money makes it impossible for voters to know who is behind amendments to our constitution.

Patricia Brigham, president of the League of Women Voters of Florida, denounced the “shadowy committee that has flouted campaign finance laws by concealing every dime of the nearly $9 million it has raised and spent.”

“The public should know who’s funding these initiatives that go on to the ballot,” Brigham said in a telephone interview. “There should be as much transparency in these as possible. Our antennae go up when we are kept in the dark about who’s footing the bill.”

LWVVC members have been observing the Volusia County Canvassing Board as non-partisan citizens interested in making sure our 2020 election is fair to all voters and that ballots are safe, secure, and counted accurately. The sessions, while work-intensive, have been well organized, efficient and transparent. If you are voting by mail, be sure to sign your ballot envelope. Your signature will be verified by matching it with a signature the Department of Election has on file. You can track you ballot by checking the Volusia County Elections Department website. In our view, Volusia voters can be very confident that their mail in ballots will be counted.
