Richard L. Higgins - View Obituary & Service Information

We were saddened to hear of former Fire Chief Dick Higgins passing on Friday August 13th. Dick was instrumental in the success of Keener Township Vol Fire Dept. He was well liked by all that knew him, and respected by all those who served with him.

I never got the pleasure to work with Dick, but I had the privilege to sit and talk with Dick after I was newly elected to the Chief position. It was a very nice and encouraging conversation. - Fire Chief Tom Fentress.

Today we will pause and reflect on the servitude of former Fire Chief Higgins. We will kneel and pray for his family, tomorrow we will continue to protect our communities in honor of Dick and all those who came before us.

Late Post:

At the business meeting on May 4, 2021, The IVFA District 2 Rep Paul Watland presented Matt Kristoff with his 10 year award pin. Thank you Matt for devoting 10 years to making our community better. Then IVFA Vice President Jerry Liston spoke about the Macqueen Emergency Excellance Award for dedication to the fire service. This award is given to one member in the district annually. The award recipient for the year of 2020 was Chief Tom Fentress. Captain Woods stated that in 26 years at Keener he doesn't remember any other individual award from IVFA such as this given to a Keener Twp Firefighter.

We at Keener would like to thank the IVFA for taking the time out of their night to come and sit at our meeting and discuss issues that a lot of organizations are having.

Upon arrival crews found a fully involved attached garage fire that was extending into the home. Crews fought the fire in defensive mode. Crews then switched to offensive mode entering the home to stop the fire from extending further into the home. Crews were successful in stopping the fire at the mid point of the home. Half of the home was destroyed by fire while the other half suffered major heat, smoke and water damage. Rensselaer Fire also assisted at the scene. Keener crews remained on scene for over two hours. The home was occupied at the time and all occupants escaped safely. No injuries were reported.
