Tri-Cities NAACP is saddened by the news of Chadwick Boseman's death. The success of Black Panther not only surpassed $1 billion at the box office, this fictional movie inspired a movement to embrace African pride. It reminded us of a land that was lead by Kings and Queens. The many languages spoken, earthly riches, and the beauty and strength of a people who were ravaged and enslaved could be seen through a different lens.

We can’t thank Toni Pippins-Poole, Dallas County Elections Administrator, enough for providing us with updates on how voters can keep safe from COVID-19 during this extremely important election. Please visit our website https://www.tricitiesnaacp.org/ to read more about Safety Protocols for Voters.

May elections were postponed until November as Covid-19 took hold. Voters are being largely left on their own to balance their voting rights with the health risks of going to a polling place.

Good advice for people who feel unsafe about voting in person but now fear the USPS will be unable to deliver a “mail-in” ballot in a timely fashion.
There is a way around it:
1. Request a mail-in ballot.
2. Do not mail it.
3. Google your supervisor of elections to see where you can drop off your mail-in ballot. Its usually NOT THE POLLING PLACE. All states allow this!
Here is what you're accomplishing by doing this:
1. You're not relying on the USPS to get your ballot in on time, so no matter what, your ballot gets in on time.
2. You don't have to worry about standing in long lines and risking infection. You're just stopping by to drop it off.
3. You still voted! Hooray!
Also, when you drop it off find out how to track it online to make sure it is verified. California, Oregon, Washington Colorado have systems that can track your ballot just like tracking a package from Amazon.

07/26/2020

FROM THE DESK OF EDUCATION CHAIR ALISA:

Dallas County Health and Human Services issued an order last week requiring all Dallas County schools to delay in-person education and extracurricular activities until after Sept. 7, 2020 due to the surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations. The Cedar Hill, Desoto, Duncanville, and Lancaster ISD’s announced that schools would begin Sept. 8, 2020.

“While I understand this delay presents some challenges, the order does not prohibit school districts from being creative and implementing methods of allowing students to make initial connections with teachers and school administrators. For example, drive-by orientation or meet and greet on school campuses would be helpful for anxious students. It is my observation that this delay will allow school districts time to establish needed protocols to ensure the safety of teachers, administrators, and students, as well as create standards for rapid response to properly handle COVID-19 issues. I am in FULL support of this delayed opening.”

FROM THE DESK OF POLITICAL ACTION CHAIR TONNETTE:

“On July 14, 2020, I worked as a Poll Worker at a polling location in Dallas for the Democratic Primary Run-Off Election. From my perspective, the voting process was very efficient and safe for the voters and Poll Workers. Health protocols and safety recommendations given by the Secretary of State and the Dallas County Elections Administrator for voters and poll workers were strictly adhered to.

Voters were impressed with the safety procedures at my particular polling place. Hand sanitizer stations were located just outside of the polling location for voter usage and social distancing was encouraged. Most of the voters wore their own face masks or obtained a free mask at the polling site. Some voters brought their own marking instrument to utilize for the touch-less voting machines. My team constantly sanitized all voting equipment and tools.

Even voters who requested and received mail-in ballots came to the polling place and turned in their unopened envelopes because they wanted the experience to vote in person.

At my location, we processed over 338 voters. Only a few voters requested Curbside Voting for various reasons. The wait time was nearly obsolete due to the professionalism and orderly safety precautions displayed by the Election Judge and Poll Workers.”

What was YOUR experience voting during COVID-19?
