Rio Grande County Search and Rescue Responds to B***o Creek
▫Vehicle stranded & dogs missing in B***o Creek▫
On Friday Jul 21, 2023 at 5:06 pm Rio Grande County Search and Rescue was contacted by Rio Grande County Sheriff’s Office and was requested by Sheriff Robinson to respond to the area of B***o Creek Trail and to assist in assessing the removal of a jeep and to attempt to recover an abandoned dog.
Search and Rescue members responded to the B***o Creek Trailhead and did not locate the vehicle with information initially provided.
The driver of the vehicle was located at the Rio Grande Hospital where the driver described the location of the vehicle and that they had left the dog on scene. Search and Rescue determined that the driver of the Jeep had gone around a 50” OHV Only gate and then proceeded on the B***o Creek trail in the Jeep. The trail is not designated for use by Motor Vehicles over 50”. The driver continued down the trail until he could not continue any further.
Search and Rescue gained access through the top of trail 873, and continued 2.3 miles down B***o Creek Canyon by 4-wheeler. The dog was located 2.3 miles down the trail and despite attempts from SAR volunteers very experienced with dogs, the dog was aggressive and tried to bite responders. Responders were unable to recover the dog or the vehicle due to it getting dark. Food was left food for the dog and SAR hiked back out.
Forest Service Law Enforcement removed the vehicle Saturday morning.
The Jeep did not stay on a designated trail for the size of the vehicle. The trail was designated for 50” and under. When you are recreating in the back country it is very important to follow the signs and only go on designated roads for your vehicle and STAY ON THE TRAIL. Unlike other parts of the country it can take some vegetation years to recover from the damage resulting from offroading.
