Literacy Beyond Borders Project: Zambia

Literacy Beyond Borders Project: Zambia Providing learning tools that stimulate a literate environment in the classroom and the community.

According to UNESCO, literacy presents โ€œ... potential for further intellectual growth and contribution to the economic-socio-cultural development of a societyโ€ (Monitoring Report, 2001). Given this statement, the current adult literacy rate in Zambia is approximately 61.4 percent meaning about 2/5ths of the population lacks educational opportunity. The purpose of the Literacy beyond Borders Projec

t is to provide more learning materials that create literacy skills that will ultimately increase the literacy rate. The reconstruction of a school library with the help of Enactus could empower the desire to learn, widen the scope of information, and provide Zambian juveniles with more learning tools to support fundamental education. Our goal is to collect 1,500 books and approximately 1,500 USD for library materials to reconstruct a small school library in Lusaka, Zambia.
