In OHIO:
.. “This kind of invisible barrier of not having access to a safe and dignified restroom experience when you're out and about, is very, very isolating to people with disabilities and medical conditions,” Kirkwood said.

It’s a loss for communities, too, who miss out on the contributions of people like Joel and Aiden when a lack of accessible restrooms keeps them at home.

“Having more universal changing tables across Ohio means freedom to myself and my son and my family. It means freedom to go into our communities and experience life just like everyone else,” Kirkwood siad.

The inclusion of universal changing tables in the state’s new rest stop areas will allow Ohioans with developmental disabilities to engage more with their communities.

Accessible restrooms with adult sized changing tables are not only needed for family caregivers with children who have disabilities, but these are also needed for people who have dementia and require additional support and assistance in the restroom. It's time to make restrooms accessible for all.

“Adult sized changing tables allow individuals with disabilities or medical conditions related to toileting to change with or without assistance. These tables are rarely found in public restrooms, and as a result, those who need them are often changed on floors, in vehicles, or are unable to stay in public spaces for more than a few hours.”

Since our team first began on this journey to advocate for more accessible restrooms, two of our team members' children have passed. We are heartbroken and missing them tremendously.

Please join us in sending our thoughts and love to the Frederick and Barrow families as we remember and honor Michaela and Cam.

Our team is taking a break due to these heart-breaking losses. We thank you for your kindness and patience.

The Colorado Accessibility Project will return after we've taken some time to grieve and regroup as a team.

If we have to feel thankful for accessible restrooms - including adult-sized changing tables and lifts/hoists - when are we ever going to be equal in the community?

"Change never happens at the pace we think it should. It happens over years of people joining together, strategizing, sharing, and pulling all the levers they possibly can. Gradually, excruciatingly slowly, things start to happen, and then suddenly, seemingly out of the blue, something will tip." — Judith Heumann 1947-2023

What a heartbreaking loss today for our disability community ♿️ and the world 🌎.

What will you do to help make our world more accessible & inclusive? ♿️ You can start by advocating for Changing Places restrooms.

Without Changing Places restrooms, which include an adult-sized height-adjustable changing table and lift/hoist, disabled children and adults who need more than what typical ADA restrooms offer, are changed on dirty restroom floors, in the trunk space of a car or in the back of a van or SUV, or simply left at home unable to venture out into the world.

Let's bring change to Colorado with Changing Places restrooms ♿️

FAQs 📝

Q) How can I build a Changing Places restroom in the facility I help manage?

Here's a great guide from the UK that introduces spec's, floorplans, and guidelines and is a great way to get started.

Q) How much space does a Changing Places restroom require?

12 square meters, or just under 40 square feet

Q) But what if we don't have 40 square feet in our existing restroom facilities & can't build a new construction restroom, what can we do?

An alternative is a smaller Space to Change restroom, which you can learn about here:

Q) How much space does a Space to Change restroom require?

8 square meters, or just under 27 square feet.

Enjoying time away from home is being made easier with Space to Change accessible toilets.

"... The fact is that we haven’t embraced inclusive design in the travel sector and therefore people with disabilities are excluded and denied the same customer experience or treatment as everyone else. We are seeing far too many examples of disabled people waiting unbearable lengths of time for assistance, being stranded on planes or left abandoned in airports...
.. We want an accessible and inclusive world but yet we have built it to be exclusive. It needs reshaping not adding on or as an afterthought and to achieve this we need disabled people to be involved in the design process - ‘Nothing for us without us’. "

Thank you for sharing, All Wheels Up!

It's time for Change... let's get started here in Colorado!

Today, Colorado Accessibility Project participated in an Accessibility Tour at Denver International Airport.

The Airport's ADA Team and Executives hosted a group of various disability representatives, including Representative David Ortiz, as part of an effort to learn from & better understand the airport experience of a traveler with a disability.

We toured and provided feedback on various areas, including their current Companion Restroom, and talked more about the need for multiple Changing Places restrooms, which they are very receptive to. We will hopefully learn more of their upcoming & future plans soon.

We also met a member of their buildings team, who worked on the Changing Places restroom in the Chicago Airport. How exciting to have this team member on the DEN Airport team! We're thrilled that they have Changing Places experience!

We're very much looking forward to learning more as DEN Airport makes their plans for upcoming & future construction projects. We're so thankful for their invitation and their time in listening to all of our feedback on ways to make the Airport more accessible ♿️
