Bear sighting in Westminster

We’re aware (and so is CPW) of a few bear sighting reports in our city this week.

So a friendly reminder that while spotting a bear can be exciting, remember to keep your distance. Bring pets inside and avoid approaching or interacting with the bear. Give it room to move through the area and leave on its own.

To report future wildlife concerns, please contact our Animal Management team at 303-658-4326 or call the non-emergency line at 303-658-4360.

You can also contact Colorado Parks and Wildlife at 303-297-1192.

If there is an immediate emergency, please call 911.

Who's excited for football season?!

The Honor Guard participated in the flag presentation for the Broncos' preseason game on Friday alongside the Westminster Fire Department. We were grateful for the opportunity and the chance to represent our city!

And that's a wrap on this summer's Mowing with Cops: Lawn Enforcement Program!

This group was awesome! Led by our dedicated School Resource Officers and in partnership with Raising Men & Women Lawn Care Service, the program provides free lawn care to residents who need a helping hand.

This summer, we had 9 teens help maintain 80 yards for our residents.

Once volunteers mow 100 yards, they earn their own mower, yard trimmer and leaf blower — provided by 'Raising Men & Raising Women.' This year we celebrated one graduate! This program is all about service and furthering our connections with the youth and the community we serve.

If you’re interested in joining the program next summer, please fill out this form: https://ow.ly/yhcc50ZC5g6

And we're back! We're pleased to welcome our 50th Citizens Police Academy class! (our first class was in 1997!)

It’s your behind-the-scenes look at everything from patrol and investigations to K9 and SWAT.

All spots have been filled, but there's always next year for those interested. Huge thanks to Chief Haubert and the Westminster Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association for helping us kick off this year's academy!

Keep our kids safe! As students head back to the classroom and school buses hit the roads, make sure you know the rules!

Last year, a new law took effect for drivers when it comes to a stopped school bus displaying flashing red lights. Drivers going the opposite direction of the bus must also stop unless there is a physical barrier separating the directions of traffic. If you are traveling the same direction as the bus, you have to stop, regardless.

FAQs for oncoming traffic:

Q: What if there are painted lines or a painted median separating opposing directions of traffic?

A: This is not a physical barrier and therefore you must stop.

----

Q: There is a raised median separating the opposing direction of traffic. Do I still need to stop?

A: If you are a driver coming from the oncoming lane, you may proceed to drive with caution as this is considered a physical barrier.

----

Q: How far back must drivers stop behind a school bus with its flashing red lights?

A: Drivers must stop at least 20 feet before reaching a school bus that is stopped with its red lights flashing, whether it is on your side of the road, the opposite side of the road or at an intersection.

All jokes aside, an SRO’s job is about so much more than keeping our schools safe. They serve as mentors, trusted resources and positive role models for students. The SRO Team includes 7 SROs and 1 Sergeant, proudly serving 44 schools across Westminster. This team truly is the best of the best!

We're going to start with the moral of the story on this one: If you have a doggie door, keep an eye on it. You never know who else might decide to use it...

Not your everyday call, but we responded out to help a neighbor who had some unexpected visitors (entire family of raccoons) who had made their way inside through the dog door and weren’t interested in leaving.

Luckily, our officers were able to help and safely get the raccoons back outside and on their way! We’ll let them stick to the great outdoors from here on out.
