So this was pretty cool to see ...

Over time, our Property and Evidence Unit occasionally ends up with bicycles that remain unclaimed long after all required holding periods have expired. So, one of our School Resource Officers had a great idea: refurbish them and put them back into the community where they could make a difference.

And that's exactly what we did. Now, several of these bicycles found new homes with local kids identified through our schools and community partners as being in need. We love to see it!

You can't be doing that ...

Officers recently recovered two stolen motorcycles after responding to the area of 80th Ave and Sheridan Blvd. An individual called police saying he had tracked his stolen motorcycle near the area and provided officers with a description of the suspect. When officers arrived, they saw a man and a woman get on two motorcycles - both were confirmed stolen.

Turns out the man was also carrying a handgun with an active protection order prohibiting him from being in possession of a firearm or consuming alcohol.

Both individuals were taken into custody, and the motorcycles were returned.

*It's important to note all persons are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Alright y'all, it's that time of year again. Yes, we know people have opinions about fireworks. But before the comment section does what the comment section does, here's what you need to know:

It's America's 250th birthday, and yes, people will be celebrating. It's also very dry outside, so please celebrate responsibly. Handling, possession, sale, or use of illegal fireworks is a violation of city code and is subject to a court summons.

Permissible Fireworks (allowed from July 3 at midnight through July 5 at noon) - basically, if it stays on the ground and doesn't explode, you're probably in the clear

Illegal Fireworks - Anything that flies, explodes or makes a loud noise

Please do not call 911 to report fireworks violations unless there's an injury or something is on fire.

Phew! Good save, AMOs!

Animal Management Officers (AMOs) responded to a call involving two goslings tangled in fishing line at Stratford Lakes Park. After carefully capturing the pair, officers were able to remove a fishing hook from one of the goslings and free them from the entanglement.

Incidents like this are a reminder that fishing gear left behind can have serious consequences for wildlife. When fishing around wildlife, consider using barbless hooks and circle hooks, which can reduce injuries and are easier to remove if an animal becomes accidentally hooked. Biodegradable fishing line and gear can also help minimize long-term hazards.

Most importantly, always pack up your gear at the end of the day to help prevent future wildlife injuries and save lives.

Man with felony warrant arrested after foot pursuit

officers contacted a man near 84th Ave and Federal Blvd who had an active felony warrant for failure to comply on multiple charges, including possession with intent to distribute, vehicular eluding, motor vehicle theft, obstruction, resisting arrest and other related offenses.

Naturally, he tried to run because apparently that always works out so well. He darted into oncoming traffic before officers eventually caught up with him and took him into custody. He also was found to be in possession of co***ne, M**A and other controlled substances.

Great work by patrol officers, and thank you to the motorists who slowed down and gave officers the space needed to safely take him into custody.

It’s fledgling season!

One of our Animal Management Officers (AMOs) responded to a report of a young eagle on the ground near Standley Lake this morning.

This is a good reminder that young eagles are currently fledgling, which means they’re learning to leave the nest and fly. During this stage, it’s not unusual to see them on the ground as they build strength by flapping their wings, hopping and moving between branches. The parents keep a close eye on them and will feed or care for them while they are on the ground. This young bird likely ventured just a little further from the nest than intended, but made it back just fine!

If you encounter a fledgling eagle, please keep your distance and allow it to continue its natural development. These birds are simply doing what they do.

Investing in training and bringing back new ideas to better serve our community!

This week, our Co-Responders joined professionals from across the nation at the National Co-Responder Conference in Dallas, gaining valuable insight into innovative approaches for building and enhancing crisis response programs.

Here in Westminster, our Co-Responder Unit plays a vital role in daily operations. By pairing a mental health specialist with a police officer, the unit responds to behavioral health-related calls for service, connecting individuals in crisis with the resources and support they need.

We are so proud of the work our Co-Responders do every day and their commitment to continually improving the services we provide to our community.

Learn more about the daily operations within the Westminster Police Department including SWAT, K9, Patrol Procedures, Investigations, Crime Lab and so much more! Classes will run every Wednesday from 6 PM to 9 PM starting 8/19 through 11/4 with a graduation ceremony on 11/12.
