Denver District Attorney John Walsh grew up in the Denver area and has devoted his entire career to law, public service, and community advocacy. After receiving his law degree from Stanford Law School, he clerked for Judge J. Circuit before moving to Los Angeles to work for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. Initially, he prosecuted a variety of cases but eventually

focused on white collar crime and fraud, ultimately becoming chief of the Major Frauds unit. Returning to Denver in 1995, John became a partner at Holland & Hart, and later at Hill & Robbins, and co-founded Invest in Kids, a nonprofit focused on early childhood health and education for vulnerable families. In 2010, President Barack Obama appointed John as Colorado’s U.S. John served for six years in that role, and tackled numerous major issues, including gun violence, testifying before Congress in support of Colorado’s "red flag" law. He also pushed for reforms in federal sentencing laws and clemency for nonviolent drug offenders. Attorney General Eric Holder appointed John national chairman of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee of U.S. Attorneys. John’s commitment to diversity and inclusion has been central to his work. A fluent Spanish speaker, he co-founded the Colorado Bar Association’s Spanish-Speaking Lawyers Committee and served on the board of Escuela de Guadalupe in Denver, a dual-language school. He has also built strong relationships with Colorado’s Black, Latino, Muslim, and tribal communities, working to address the many critical issues that affect them. Before being elected District Attorney, John was a partner at the law firm WilmerHale, leading impactful many pro bono efforts that involved immigration rights, defending civil rights laws and challenging reproductive health restrictions. John has received many professional honors. Among other awards, in 2009, he received the Colorado Lawyers Committee’s lifetime achievement award; in 2018, he and his WilmerHale colleagues received the Pro Bono firm of the Year award from the Rocky Mountain Immigrant Action Network, and in 2023, Colorado Law Week named John Attorney of the Year.

A Denver jury has convicted Matthew O’Mara of two counts of First-Degree Murder. On December 7, 2022, O’Mara stabbed to death 20-year-old Taylor Trevino and seriously injured 56-year-old Christina Harden in an apartment in the 10100 block of East Harvard Avenue. Christina died of her injuries a few days later. O’Mara faces life in prison without the possibility of parole when he’s sentenced on July 24. Denver Police Department

They’ll be learning from attorneys, investigators, victim advocates, paralegals and restitution technicians while working in various units around the office, including County Court, District Court, Cold Case, Child Victim Unit, Domestic Violence Unit, Restitution, Spanish Translation & Language Access, and Conviction Review.

The Denver District Attorney’s Office extends our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Judge Andre Rudolph, one of Denver’s longest-serving and well-respected judges, who died unexpectedly Friday at the age of 59. ”Judge Rudolph was a true public and community servant,” said District Attorney John Walsh. “He will be sorely missed by the Denver County Court, by all of us who practice before it, and by the many, many community groups and people he did so much to lift up."

Simon Gurule was convicted at trial today of Second-Degree Murder, First-Degree Assault, and Accessory to a Crime. On June 8, 2024, Gurule drove the car that was used during the murder of 29-year-old Manuel Quintana at a gas station in west Denver. A second victim was also shot but survived. Gurule faces between 26 and 80 years in prison when he's sentenced on July 27. Last October, the man who shot and killed Quintana and the surviving victim during the incident was sentenced to 40 years in prison. Denver Police Department

Rafael Acosta-Hernandez pleaded guilty today to one count of Second-Degree Murder. On March 6, 2025, Acosta-Hernandez shot and killed 25-year-old Leonel Silva-Perez in the 26-hundred block of North Zuni Street. Acosta-Hernandez faces up to 38 years in prison when he’s sentenced on July 10.

DA Walsh joined several members of our office at last night's fundraiser for Restorative Denver, a program designed to address crime, harm and public safety through a community-based restorative justice program. The recidivism rate after one year for people in the program is a remarkably low 1.9%.
