There must be accountability at all levels of the criminal justice system if we want to see real change.

It takes courage to imagine a life outside of prison when you're wrongfully incarcerated. The barriers to freedom can feel impossible to overcome. The Organization of Exonerees gives hope to those in the middle of that struggle and fights to ensure that no one has to endure the pain of wrongful conviction.

Marcellus Williams was executed in Missouri on Sept. 24, 2024, despite no DNA evidence linking him to the crime and the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney acknowledging that errors were made by the trial prosecutors. His fight for freedom highlights the desperate need for criminal justice reform in this country.

Imagine being wrongfully incarcerated for 26 years, only to be released in early 2020, right as the world shuts down and everything is upside down.

"Be that somebody."

Wrongful convictions start and end with police investigations.
These are three examples of faulty, inefficient or even non existent police investigations.
We need accountability on all levels of the criminal legal system, starting with the police.

Ruben Piñuelas graduated from UofM law school yesterday.
This is his full 8:25 minute speech as 11 exonerees supported him from the audience.
What an amazing journey from being wrongfully convicted to becoming exonerated to becoming a lawyer dedicated to seeing this system changed so that nothing like this happens again.
Ruben comes into this work with his eyes wide open, and we can’t wait to see what else he accomplishes.

Is the glass of criminal legal reform half empty or half full?
We had a great and fulfilling time in Chicago last month attending the Innocence Network Conference. Meeting like minded individuals, strategizing and hearing stories from inspirational leaders in this space.
Whether or not the glass is half full or half empty we are committed to filling it up to overflowing!

Wrongful convictions start and stop with the police.
They are first on the scene, first to take down notes and first to conduct an investigation.
But there are no consequences when the police do their job improperly. Justice reform needs to include police accountability to be effective in reducing wrongful convictions. Full stop.

Let the flood gates open!

The International Innocence Conference was amazing. We attended last month and had an amazing time celebrating, connecting and galvanizing.
We will be sharing more moments from the conference in the days and weeks ahead!
Open the doors and let a flood of the innocent people out!
