On April 28, 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt stood before a crowd in Shenandoah, Iowa, and offered a remarkably simple formula for what a healthy society (and a useful life) requires:

“We need courage, we need decency, and we need the saving grace of common sense.”

More than 120 years later, his standard still holds up remarkably well: Have the courage to act, the decency to care, and the common sense to know when a better course is available.

Not a bad standard for leadership - or for life.

For the 2026 interim, the Joint Labor, Health and Social Services Interim Committee adopted Workers' Compensation as its Priority #1 topic. As part of this study, the committee is considering amending the Wyoming Workers' Compensation Act to explicitly classify public safety communications workers (911 dispatchers) as first responders.
At the May meeting, Labor & Health Committee made the motion to draft a Committee bill to classify public safety communications workers (911 dispatchers) as first responders.
We will review the draft bill at our next meeting - October 1st & 2nd in Riverton.

COMMUNITY UPDATE: DISPATCHERS AS FIRST RESPONDERS

One of the most eye-opening things we've learned over these past few months after the critical incident in Baggs is that our dispatchers are not considered first responders in the state of Wyoming.

Despite being the "first" first-responder, our dispatchers do not fit the definition of "first responder" as set forth by Wyoming Statute 27-14-102(a)(###i.)

Our dispatchers not only coordinate emergency response amongst a multitude of different agencies, but they also manage emergencies themselves, from instructing callers how to administer CPR to talking with individuals who are suffering suicidal ideations or mental health crises.

We strongly feel that our dispatchers deserve the recognition of first responder. Without this designation, our dispatchers do not receive support from Workmans Compensation for traumatic injuries experienced on the job, such as post traumatic stress disorder.

Our dispatchers fight for us, and its only right we fight for them.
