Converse County Search and Rescue Volunteers with Converse County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Mounted Patrol performed a mock Search and Rescue Training exercise recently.

After learning of a Downed Aircraft, the group responded to and deployed resources to locate the aircraft including their Drone. After locating the downed aircraft, they hiked into its location.

Again, this was just a training exercise, and not a recent crash. But this did give Volunteers and the Sheriff’s Office Resources the practice in case a real incident should occur. The aircraft was also giving a fresh coat of paint in hopes it will be obvious it is a known crash for the next 10 – 15 years.

This weekend, Converse County Search and Rescue Volunteers responded to our 12th mission this year.

A hunter was reported overdue, and his friends could not locate him. Deputies and SAR Vol. deployed with various vehicles to access the challenging area and even searched with a Drone. The hunter was located by the ground searchers; he had taken a bad fall down a steep slope with bands of cliffs. He was treated by SAR Volunteers, Memorial Hospital of Converse County EMS, and transported by Black Hills Life Flight 7 to an area hospital.

Thank you to all of our partners who assisted us in this difficult, all-night rescue. We would also like to thank the families of our SAR Volunteers who let our members leave you for those important hours to help others, your sacrifice for others is appreciated too.

This is a shining example that accidents happen and how to let your friends and family know where you will be, when you should be back, and what to do if you are not in communication at a certain point. Hunters, please involve your friends and family in your plans in case the unexpected happens. We all want to be able to help you as quickly as possible, should the need arise.

Janet Becker, of Hot Springs, South Dakota brought in 2 pies in appreciation regarding an incident that occurred on 4/28/2024 where she received help from deputy Pete Isner and deputy Hunter Dotson. While heading home to South Dakota, her vehicle started smoking so she pulled into the Orin Junction Rest Area and called for assistance. Isner and Dotson assessed her mechanical issue and gave her a courtesy ride to a local auto parts store to buy parts to fix her vehicle and a return ride back to her vehicle. It appeared one of Janet’s coolant connections on her engine had broken and spilled coolant. The deputies removed, replaced the broken parts, and filled the coolant in the radiator. Undersheriff Nate Hughes and Deputy Daerrian Laird accepted this generous gift from Ms. Becker.

Dear Community,

We are interested in collecting testimonials from the Survivors and Families that Converse County Search and Rescue Volunteers have helped over the years. If you are interested in sharing your story, please post it here.

We are collecting these accounts to share with our state legislators during this upcoming legislative session as our leaders present requests for benefits for our volunteers. We know that our elected officials care about us and know what we do is important, but nothing drives that home like a personal account of a rescue from the people we help.

Thanks for taking the time to help us with this.
