Kettle Moraine is getting a new mascot costume - we will still be the Lasers.

Which option do you think is a better representation of the Kettle Moraine Lasers?

Nationwide expansion of private voucher schools?

I just vetoed a bill that would have required opting Wisconsin into a nationwide expansion of private voucher schools under President Donald Trump’s and Republicans’ ‘Big Beautiful Bill, which is expected to divert billions of dollars from public schools and public education.

At Tuesday night’s meeting the KM School Board voted to support teachers by urging Governor Evers to sign AB 614, a pro-teacher bill.

AB 614 allowed teachers to remove disruptive students from their classrooms, and provided parental notification if a child is removed, and in certain situations, requires a behavioral plan before a child can be returned to the classroom. It provided protection for teachers who remove students. The bill did not apply to kids with IEPs.

Unfortunately, before the letter from KM was given final approval, Governor Evers vetoed the bill.

I don't know who will care about my opinion on this, but I fully endorse Jay Crouse and Amy for KM in the school board election.

I do not always agree with either of them, but I know that they put the interests of KM's students and taxpayers first. They don't get distracted by outside noise, but focus on what's best for the district.

Jay brings institutional knowledge to the board that is invaluable. Maybe because we are both attorneys, we generally think alike, even if we reach different conclusions.

Amy for KM brings principled leadership to the Board, and is heavily involved in the schools. Sometimes she goes further in comments than I wish, she would, but I find I agree with the principles behind the comments she makes.

Just as importantly, I cannot support Katie for KM - Kettle Moraine School District for the school board.

She has spoken to the KM Board in public comment three times. The first was about AI, which is her field of expertise. The next two times were about creating an ICE-specific policy for KM Schools. She also emailed the Board about it. KM has policies related to law enforcement, which also apply to ICE. She met with our SRO and our Superintendent about those policies., and was not satisfied, wanting additional ICE-specific policies.

When I ran for School Board two years ago, I said I wanted to turn down the rhetoric and volume of the board. Last year, in the middle of the Title IX debate, I said my only goal was to make sure KM wasn't in U.S. DOJ's crosshairs. No matter your thoughts on these national political issues (like Title IX and Immigration), bringing them into KM policy only serves to divide our KM community, not bring it together.

I also watched the candidate forum which raised further questions. Three things stood out to me.

1- Her answers were vague and she did not seem knowledgeable about KM issues, even in the questions given to her before hand.

2- She said the board needed to be more transparent, without saying where the Board is not transparent. As I said at the meeting on Tuesday night, that is demonstrably false. Anyone watching the Board sees the Board deliberate in real time. It's not performance, I know I'm not that good of an actor.

3 - She had a really good answer on AI. Although that is her field, her handling of that question underscored how bad the rest of her answers were.

If you have any questions about my thoughts, reach out. I'm always happy to talk.

Last night, the Kettle Moraine School Board voted UNANIMOUSLY to not renew our membership with the Wisconsin Association of School Boards (WASB). You can view the discussion beginning at roughly 2:09 of the video below. My comments begin shortly thereafter.

Last year, I advocated to stay in WASB. I no longer hold that position. For the sake of time last night, I did not go into ALL my complaints about WASB in the last year, so I want to elaborate on some.

WASB and the majority of their members advocate against KM. We sought to get out of paying for their advocacy. The delegate assembly rejected that request, overwhelmingly. I discuss that a little in the clip. Had that request been approved, I may have had a different position.

One of our resolutions was to remove the property tax component of school choice/independent charter school funding. This has a direct impact on property taxpayers in KM and across the state. (About $150/year on a median value home). WASB was not going to place our resolution before the Convention because there was a competing resolution. Thank you to Liz for KM's fierce advocacy pushing for it. It was rejected, as was the competing resolution.

On that subject, KM's CFO was confronted by colleagues saying that he and KM didn't know how choice funding worked. That is OBJECTIVELY false. Our CFO had, weeks before, received a PhD from UW-Madison for his dissertation on school choice funding.

Similar confrontations occurred at the convention about KM being out of step. I won't detail them all.

Kettle Moraine is, objectively, one of the best performing school districts in the state. We have bent our cost curve, and our finances are stable. We don't claim we can't educate kids because we need more money.

Kettle Moraine does not benefit from WASB, which frequently works against KM's interests. As I said last night. I am done with WASB.

KM Alliance shows their bias by posting this today, rather than 3 Weeks ago when this happened.

This budget has the most revenue available for schools ever. The biggest special Ed ever. It takes KM out of deficit (assuming no other changes) until 2031.

The GOP-controlled Joint Finance Committee is putting its stamp on the state budget. Last week, it took up K-12 funding and tax cuts. Will the plans survive Democratic Gov. Tony Evers' veto pen?

🚨 Addressing the Email Incident 🚨

Earlier today, an email intended only to be sent after the Board’s vote tomorrow night was inadvertently sent to some staff.

Let me be clear: No decision has been made.
The Board votes tomorrow night, Wednesday , June 11 at 7pm at the High School Library.

What happened was a mistake—plain and simple. The district had prepared communications for any outcome in advance, to ensure timely, respectful outreach to staff and families once the decision is official. Unfortunately, one of those draft emails was accidentally triggered and sent early. Technology and human processes don’t always sync perfectly—especially under pressure.

Understandably, this has caused concern and confusion. Please know this:

✅ The Board has not voted.
✅ No final decision exists.
✅ Every scenario is still on the table until that vote is cast publicly.

The process leading to this decision has been long, difficult, and emotional. It has also been transparent. We’ve reviewed detailed data, held community listening sessions, and asked hard questions—not just about costs, but about community identity, enrollment trends, long-term viability, and student opportunity.

Mistakes like this one can hurt trust, but we hope our commitment to transparency and thoughtful decision-making continues to come through.

I encourage everyone to attend tomorrow’s meeting. Your presence and voices matter—especially in moments like these.

Let’s continue to show up, even when it’s hard.
One KM. One community. One step at a time

𝗪𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂 — 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟭𝟭

One of the most important things I want our KM community to know right now is this: 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙫𝙤𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧. 𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙬𝙚’𝙧𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜.

After hearing concerns from many of you about the original timing of the vote, the Board and administration have made a change. The Special Board Meeting has been moved to 𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟭𝟭, after the school year ends, to make it more accessible for families and staff.

This entire process has been deeply emotional, complex, and meaningful—and it’s far from easy. But as one board member, I can tell you: the level of engagement from our community is exactly what strong public schools are built on.

I’ve read your emails, listened at meetings, and spoken directly with many of you. I’ve spent hours reviewing data, asking hard questions, and reflecting on what this decision means, not just financially, but for our identity and our future.

Let me say it plainly:

𝐖𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞. 𝐖𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭.

Consolidating excellence means:

✅Honoring our responsibility to current and future taxpayers

✅Making sure students have access to strong, sustainable programming

✅Preserving what makes KM exceptional—just in a more efficient, unified way

I’m using the Elementary School Evaluation Criteria Matrix to guide my thinking, because this isn’t about picking a school, it’s about honoring our values and being accountable to our Strategic Plan and community priorities.

No decision has been made yet. And that makes it even more important that we all stay grounded in facts, respectful dialogue, and shared purpose.

𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝘀. 𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘂𝗽, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼.

KM is stronger when we’re united. Let’s move forward together as ONE KM.
