Greens 'n' Things Urban Farm

Greens 'n' Things Urban Farm Converting empty lots to valuable garden space in St. Petersburg, FL with a focus on lettuces, baby greens and root veggies for local families and restaurants.

I’ve been interested in growing my own food for a while now, thinking it’d be neat to be self-sustainable and operate a small farm for a living. Unfortunately, the realities of a farmer are not the same as the utopian vision I had. Land is expensive, equipment and maintenance are expensive, and the economies of scale do not operate by the same rules for farmers as other manufacturers. And so it’s

over before you even start. These are huge burdens to overcome for a new farmer, and are the reasons the average age of a U.S. farmer is now 58 years and continues to rise. There are many different approaches to farming, but nothing I’d come across fit my context of urban living in the most densely populated county in Florida. If you look hard enough though, you can find just about anything. Let’s eliminate the barriers to entry... I’m already paying for the land I’m living on and spending time to maintain it, and the front yard is brown, dusty and bare and sees no use other than a buffer between the house and the street. I cannot fit a tractor in this space, let alone any specialized planting or harvesting equipment, or processing facilities found on a typical farm; therefore, equipment and maintenance costs are reduced exponentially. Highly intensive and organic farming practices are used extensively in other parts of the world and have a long history of growing lots of food in small spaces. These techniques allow a greater diversity of crop and a higher rotation of production that cannot be matched by large scale farms. That’s how we got here; six, 25’ raised beds in the front yard giving us 375 square feet (almost a full 1/100th of an acre!) of bona fide farm land in the center of the most populous city in the most densely populated county in Florida, St. Petersburg. Sunshine City! This Spring at Greens ‘n’ Things Urban Farm, we’ll see what we can grow, trying different varieties of lettuces, salad and braising greens, spinach, chard and baby roots like radishes, beets, turnips and carrots, even some squash, zucchini and peppers. No lights, no pumps, no reservoirs, no tractors. Just sun, dirt and water.

Spring cleaning on the farm!
I've got some great help this spring and it makes a HUGE difference for this otherwise one-man show!! We're trying to tidy up and knock out a few big projects before it gets unbearable outside during summer and we're crushing it right now 💪
The compost factory at the main farm has been neglected, but I've got several piles to stack if I want usable compost to start next season 🌱🧑‍🌾 We've been hard at work this week to get ahead of the summer growth of all our noxious vines and make new compost rings for our crop residue from the farm. (Also still working on the nursery. Also still planting and harvesting and going to market each week.)
Nothing like a little farm tour with the next week to get me motivated! 😁
I'm not getting as many posts out this spring because there's A LOT going on in the background, and I've only got so much to give each day, but rest assured the farm is still farming each week for at least a couple more months! 🥳
I'm open Saturdays 9a-1p at the Nursery, and we've got FRESH BREAD AVAILABLE from each week (pre order on their site!) The baguette 🥖 was 🔥

Stop by 1740 21st St N., St Pete 33713 on Saturday mornings.
I'll have a nice group of helpers tomorrow morning, so if you'd like to volunteer, we could use the extra hands! 😎
Let's eat, St Pete!

I'm out here stacking piles of b-e-a-utiful veggies for the weekend.
Get the goods while the gettins good folks! It's getting hot in a hurry and we're starting to hit our last harvests of the season for some of these veggies, while we patiently wait for our warm season crops to put out 😜
I'll have the best of what's available at the Farmstand tomorrow morning 9a-1p at 1740 21st St N., St Pete
We'll see the rest of you Sunday at the at St Pete High School 10a-2p 🌱 😎👍

Another big week on the farm! I've got some great helpers right now and they were able to build more nursery tables, flip more rows for planting, clean up my compost, and pot up TONS of fruit trees and veggie starts while I was with family for a few days this week.
And now we're out harvesting for the weekend!!
🤘😎
I'm open at the Nursery Saturday 9a-1p with plants and produce, and starting this weekend, we'll have BREAD available for pick up also!
Pre-order with by midnight and you can pick up a fresh loaf in the morning when you shop for veggies and plants tomorrow!
😁👍

Here's a quick look at what I've gotten myself into this Spring 😳
I'm completely reworking the Nursery side of the greenhouses right now... Breaking down and removing old tables, clearing the old crushed shell floor to lay new landscape fabric, and building 22 new 5'x8' tables to hold our plants.
We're also in the peak of farming season here in Pinellas County, so I still have to harvest, wash and pack a big ol' pile of veggies for my CSA Members, and our Markets each weekend 🥵
It's a ton of physical labor and super long days, but it will all be worth it, promise! 😊
THIS WEEKEND we're excited to be back at for their Spring Festival, this Saturday March 21 from 9a-3p. (The Nursery will be closed this weekend)
Sunday you'll find me at the at St Pete High School 10a-2p 🌱🧑‍🌾
Let's eat, St Pete! 🤘😋
