✅ What’s new & how drones help
📡 CAL FIRE’s San Benito–Monterey Unit now runs the largest drone program in the state — with 12 dedicated pilots who fly hundreds of hours a year. Those 12 make up 40 % of all CAL FIRE’s drone flights statewide.

🛩️ The fleet includes 19 different drones, from budget models to specialized $100,000+ drones equipped with thermal cameras, high-zoom surveillance, and even cargo capabilities.

🔥 These drones assist with aerial ignition for controlled burns — using systems that drop ignition “spheres” (Dragon-Egg like devices) to safely light firebreaks in hard-to-reach areas.
Fire Engineering
🔍 On the ground, drones provide real-time thermal imaging and mapping — helping detect hot spots, monitor fire perimeters, and inspect containment lines, even through smoke or at night.

🆘 Drones also play a vital role in search and rescue — from locating missing or injured hikers to assisting swimmers in distress, using thermal cameras, water-tracking dye, glow-sticks, or even dropping supplies when needed.

These tools aren’t just “nice-to-have” — they’re life-saving assets that make wildfire response faster, smarter, and safer for both crews and communities. 🙏🔥
