Gwinnett’s Next Tax Commissioner.
I’ve been a Gwinnett County resident for 15 years, and a Democrat for my entire life. I am the product of a hardworking, widowed mother who instilled in me strong faith in God and the courage to face life head-on. I am a graduate of The University of Dayton and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
Before deciding to run for Tax Commissioner, I enjoyed a 36 year career with the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). I often sought difficult assignments where I supported and advocated for our nation’s veterans. During my time with Veterans Affairs, I was Chief Fiscal Officer for Saginaw and Detroit VA Hospitals in Michigan and for Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System. Later, I advanced to Health Systems Specialist where I worked in the areas of Quality Management, Data Analytics and Customer Service. I retired from VA as Associate Director/Chief Operating Officer of Atlanta VA Health Care System, one of the fastest growing VA facilities in the nation.
Since retiring, I have spent much of my time volunteering for community programs and organizations. Since 2013, I’ve volunteered for the Duluth Fall Festival, one of the largest fall festivals in the nation, is a success. Last year, I began helping the Duluth Complete Count Committee work to spread information about the Census and make sure that everyone is counted.
I have extensive experience managing large operations with comprehensive budgets, including a $1.9 billion budget while I was the Acting Deputy Network Director for the VA Southeast Network. When the Atlanta VA Health Care System experienced fiscal issues, I delayed my retirement, transferred to the facility and led corrective activities. I also worked on several national work groups to address department-wide technical fiscal deficiencies.
