Petition: Pass the PRO Act and Protect Workers’ Rights

Workers’ rights are under attack. Our outdated labor laws have been chipped away and weakened by anti-worker legislators. Every day, we hear about corporations openly union-busting and retaliating against working people without consequence. That’s why we need the Protecting the Right to Organize...

Donate Now to Support People in Ukraine

People in Ukraine are in grave danger of physical harm, families have fled their homes seeking refuge in neighbouring countries, and others are sheltering from bombs falling in major cities.

Normal working life has been forced to stop.

How trade unions are supporting Ukraine

The ITUC’s Ukrainian member organisations FPU and KVPU are providing support to families who desperately need assistance. Trade unions in neighbouring countries including Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova are supporting the increasing number of refugees. People need:

food and water provisions,
medical supplies,
hygiene items.
You can help Ukraine’s workers and their families by donating to the ITUC’s emergency fundraising appeal.

All funds donated will be passed on to our two member organisations to support their humanitarian work in Ukraine and member organisations in neighbouring countries to support refugees.

Wall State agency raises NJ’s credit rating a notch | NJ Spotlight News

Governor Phil Murphy said the rating upgrade demonstrates his administration has “improved the state’s fiscal footing without slashing the vital programs benefitting New Jersey families.”

It’s not by much but notable nonetheless, since it’s the first time in 20 years that it’s happened for New Jersey.

WOODY SEZ ~ "All you can write is what you see."

February 23rd, 1940, eight days after first stepping foot in NYC, a 27 year-old Woody Guthrie penned what would become his most well-known song, "This Land Is Your Land" while living at Hanover House a boarding house on 43rd Street and 6th Avenue.

Shown here is Woody's original handwritten lyric which you can see in our new exhibit "Woody Guthrie: People Are The Song" at the Morgan Library and Museum now through May 22, 2022. We'll have a number of public programs and events. Virtual talks and tours are available throughout the exhibition period for anyone who can't make it in person - https://www.themorgan.org/exhibitions/woody-guthrie

"This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York island,
From the redwood forest to the Gulf Stream waters;
This land was made for you and me.

As I was walking that ribbon of highway
I saw above me that endless skyway;
I saw below me that golden valley;
This land was made for you and me.

I've roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts;
And all around me a voice was sounding;
This land was made for you and me.

When the sun came shining, and I was strolling,
And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling,
As the fog was lifting a voice was chanting:
This land was made for you and me.

As I went walking I saw a sign there,
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing.
That side was made for you and me.

In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?

Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me."

PLEASE READ FOLLOWING PRESS RELEASE FROM AFL-CIO PRESIDENT LIZ SHULER:

We applaud the historic nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court. Judge Jackson has had a distinguished legal career, and she is eminently qualified for this critical lifetime position. Working people need a champion on the bench who will defend and protect our civil rights, including our right to organize in the workplace. Judge Jackson has a strong legal track record of fighting on behalf of working people, including during her tenure as an assistant federal public defender in Washington, D.C., and we are confident that she will bring that leadership to the highest court in the land. Representation matters and that is especially true in our nation’s legal system, which can disproportionately impact or lift up Black and Brown communities. Today’s nomination aligns with President Biden’s ongoing efforts to diversify the roster of individuals who are nominated and confirmed for the judiciary.

Being the first is never easy and Judge Jackson is doing what so many women have done before her, breaking barriers to ensure that she is not the last. We call on the U.S. Senate to deliver a speedy and fair confirmation process.

The bridge collapse in Pittsburgh is a wake-up call, and we are fortunate that no one was killed. The sad truth is, with more than 45,000 structurally deficient bridges in America, it could have happened almost anywhere in our country. This disaster highlights the urgent work we’re doing right now with the Biden–Harris administration to fix our crumbling infrastructure. Union members are ready to get to work modernizing our infrastructure so disasters like this never happen again. The labor movement thanks all the first responders who heroically rescued people in Pittsburgh today. Together, we will rebuild and create the safe, reliable and modern infrastructure we desperately need. @aflcio #LizShuler #SupportSafeBridges #WakeUpCall
