We are honored to support this scholarship each year and to recognize the hard work, dedication, and achievements of our local students.

Congratulations to our 2026 scholarship recipient, Evan Dupras, and to the entire Class of 2026 on all you have accomplished. We wish you continued success and happiness as you begin the next chapter of your journey and pursue your future goals.

FREETOWN POLICE AND FIRE SCHOLARSHIP

On behalf of the Freetown Police Association and the Freetown Firefighters Association, we are proud to announce the recipient of this year's Freetown Police and Fire Scholarship. This scholarship is intended to help Freetown students offset the cost of higher education.

When selecting recipients, we look for individuals who are committed to careers that give back to the community—fields such as fire service, law enforcement, corrections, criminal justice, fire science, emergency management, social work, and emergency medical services. By supporting the next generation of community-focused professionals, we hope to inspire and encourage those dedicated to making a meaningful difference.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Freetown community. This scholarship opportunity would not be possible without your continued support. Your participation in events like our annual softball tournament directly contributes to making this program a reality.

Congratulations to Evan Dupras of Apponequet Regional High School. Evan plans to attend Mass Maritime in the fall to pursue a career in homeland security. We wish you the best of luck on your future endeavors!

Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the courage, dedication, and selflessness of those who gave their lives protecting the freedoms we often take for granted. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

As we gather with family and friends today, we encourage everyone to take a moment to remember the true meaning of this holiday and those who are no longer with us.

We extend our gratitude to the fallen, their families, and all who have served. 🇺🇸

It is with heavy hearts that we extend our deepest condolences to the Boston Fire Department, and to the family and loved ones of Firefighter Robert “Bobby” Kilduff Jr., who lost his life in the line of duty last night while operating at a three alarm fire in Dorchester.

Our thoughts are with all who knew him and served alongside him during this difficult time.

EMS Week: May 17-23🚑

This week, we honor the essential work of EMS providers and reflect on the history of emergency medical services here in Freetown.

The Freetown Fire Department has provided EMS care since 1958, when ambulance service was primarily focused on basic transportation to local hospitals. Over the decades, EMS in Freetown has continually evolved alongside advances in emergency medicine, training, and equipment.

In 1972, members of the department became CPR certified, marking an important step toward providing more advanced prehospital care. As EMS standards continued to grow, so did the department’s capabilities — transitioning from basic first aid and transport into a modern Advanced Life Support (ALS) system staffed by Paramedics and EMTs.

Today, Freetown’s ambulances are equipped with advanced cardiac monitors, life-saving medications, airway equipment, and other modern medical technology that allows providers to deliver critical care before patients even arrive at the hospital. What began as a small local ambulance service has become an essential part of the town’s public safety system, responding to thousands of medical emergencies over the years.

During EMS Week, we recognize the dedication, professionalism, and compassion of the EMS providers — past and present — who have served the Freetown community.

Take a look at how our ambulances and EMS system have evolved through the years!

Congratulations to Firefighters Alex Columbus and Andrew DeRusha on graduating from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy’s Call/Volunteer Firefighter Recruit Training Program as members of Recruit Class #125.

The program consisted of 240 hours of training in fire suppression, search and rescue, hazardous materials response, and other essential firefighting skills, while meeting the national standards of NFPA 1001.

We appreciate their hard work and dedication throughout the program and look forward to their continued service to the Freetown community.

Congratulations to both firefighters and the entire Recruit Class #125 on this accomplishment. Welcome to the best job in the world!

At 3:06 this afternoon Freetown Fire was alerted to a “possible shed” on fire behind 5 Matawa Dr in Assonet.

The Duty crew was already dispatched to a fire alarm at a commercial facility on Mill street at the time. Deputy Lafleur diverted Engine 3 to the fire once he determined the alarm to be accidental.

On arrival, crews found a rear porch and attached building heavily involved in fire. A working fire assignment was called for including full recall of all Freetown personnel, with tankers from Berkley and Lakeville. Mass DCR also assisted. The fire was a significant distance from the street, however crews made a quick knockdown. Damage to the actual residence was held to the exterior.

During this operation, we were also dispatched to 120 Howland Rd for smoke in the house. Lakeville Car1 and Tanker responded to that along with several Freetown assets. That was a short in an electric range with no extension to the home.

The cause on Matawa Drive is believed to be an electric smoker that was on the deck.

There are no injuries to report.

🏠🔥 Home Fire Sprinklers

Home fires remain one of the leading risks to life safety, but sprinklers are one of the most effective protections available.

• About 3,700+ civilian fire deaths occur in U.S. home fires each year
• Roughly 72–80% of all fire deaths happen in the home
• In homes with sprinklers, the risk of dying in a fire drops by about 80–89%
• When sprinklers are present, fire death rates per fire are about 90% lower compared to homes without them
• In most sprinklered fires, only one sprinkler head activates and it is typically enough to control the fire

Home fires can become deadly in just minutes, but sprinklers activate quickly, often control or extinguish the fire before it spreads, and dramatically reduce fatalities, injuries, and property loss.

When combined with working smoke alarms, home fire sprinklers provide one of the strongest layers of protection available for families.
