It is with great sadness that our EHVOR family shares the loss of a dear friend, valued auxiliary member, and our dedicated EMS liaison and CPR instructor, Scott Barter.
Scott will be remembered for his generosity, commitment, and the countless hours he devoted to our organization. He played a vital role in organizing our annual CPR recertifications, always ensuring that every member was up to date, confident, and well prepared for the season ahead.
At drills and training sessions, Scott was a constant and reassuring presence, always ready to lend a hand and provide guidance with EMS support. His knowledge, reliability, and willingness to help others made a lasting impact on everyone he worked with.
Above all, Scott will be remembered for his dedicated and selfless service to the East Hampton community. His contributions made a difference in the lives of many, and his absence will be deeply felt.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. 🕊️

🌊MEET THE MEMBER 🌊
Say hello to our 2nd Assistant Chief, Maureen Rutkowski!
Since joining in 2019, Maureen has been making waves with Ocean Rescue after jumping in alongside a friend and never looking back. Now, she is the first woman in Ocean Rescue to hold a Chief position!
💙 One of the things she loves most about EHVOR: “I love guarding at triathlon events, especially helping the weaker swimmers. They always seem to be willing to share their stories while hanging on to my paddle-board for a break, and so many of the stories are so inspiring!”
😎 Beach essential: Sunglasses
🏖 Favorite beach day spot: Ditch Plains
🚨Between rescues: Volunteer with Team Rubicon
Show her some love and support!

🌊 INTRODUCING: MEET THE MEMBER 🌊
This new series highlights the incredible people behind Ocean Rescue. The ones who train hard and show up year-round for our community.

First up…
Chief Andrey Trigubovich

Andrey always wanted to be a lifeguard, and Ocean Rescue provided him with the opportunity to do so 24/7, year-round, as a volunteer. He says he simply loves everything about the ocean… but what really gets him going?
“When the tone drops, we respond to actual emergencies. The teamwork. The adrenaline. The trust in each other.”

💪 Most challenging OR moment: His first distance swim at the Main Beach Lifeguard Tournament: “Brutal survival mode.”
☀️ Beach essential: Sunscreen
🏖 Favorite beach day spot: Atlantic Ave
🌊 Favorite surf spot: Camp Hero
🦪 Fun fact: He dives for scallops in November — cold water, long process, but an incredible meal after.
🏠 Between rescues? He sells real estate.

17 seasons of showing up when it matters.

When the tone drops… we respond.

‘Twas a busy one today with Montauk School’s Polar Plunge and ice rescue training with the Montauk Fire Department.

The warmer temps and rain these last few days took care of much of the ice around town. However, there is still some to be found. Thank you for today’s training on Fort Pond. As always, practice and repetition make us better and help prepare us for when someone is in trouble.

And….Thankfully, today’s plungers did not have ice to contend with. From the smiles and laughter, we think fun was had by all.

Stay safe out there!!

Today's PSA: ICE SAFETY ALERT
Protecting Children & Pets During Freeze–Thaw Conditions
As winter temperatures fluctuate, ponds, retention basins, and waterways may appear safely frozen — but thawing ice is unpredictable and extremely dangerous.
What looks solid can collapse without warning.
Every year, children and pets are seriously injured or lost after falling through thinning ice.
What You Need to Know
• Ice becomes weakest during thaw cycles — even if it looks thick
• Moving water, springs, and runoff create hidden weak zones
• Snow-covered ice can conceal dangerous thin areas
• Pets are especially vulnerable because they follow scents and wildlife
Important Safety Rules
DO NOT:
Let pets roam off-leash near any frozen water
Attempt rescues by walking onto ice — this often results in multiple victims
DO:
Keep pets leashed near frozen waterways
Supervise children closely outdoors
Teach children to stay away from frozen ponds and lakes
Call 911 immediately if someone or a pet falls through the ice
If a Fall-Through Happens
Call 911 immediately
Keep visual contact with the victim

A Few Moments of Awareness Can Save a Life
If the ice is not professionally monitored and officially declared safe, assume it is not secure.
Please share this message with neighbors, schools, pet owners, and community groups.
Your awareness could save a life.
Stay safe this winter.
