If you’ve ever watched a Heart of Dance performance, you may have seen the Gagne family stealing the show with their energy and dance moves. 🕺💃

For Doug and Michelle, participating in Heart of Dance has become a family affair and an opportunity for everyone to bond through the joy of music and movement. At this year’s show, they even welcomed a new addition to the troupe — Michelle’s cousin Paige — who also performed.

We already can’t wait for next year’s show! ❤️

The Heritage Christian Services squad showed up strong at this year’s JPMorganChase Corporate Challenge! 👟💙

From runners chasing personal bests to walkers enjoying every step together, 30 staff members proudly represented the agency in their “Forward with Possibility” t-shirts.

Events like this are a great reminder that anything is possible when we move forward one step at a time, especially when we do it together. Thank you to everyone who participated!

For this month’s Mission Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible team at Nine Mile Point day hab! ❤️

From “Motivational Mondays” and sign language lessons to music therapy and “Bible Study Wednesdays,” the team works hard to create opportunities for connection every day. Whether they’re making dog toys for Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester, laminating library cards for local libraries or playing board games, the staff members always find creative ways to keep people engaged and included.

“We’re here to offer whatever people need to grow,” said Day Hab Manager Sonja Tisdale, who has worked at Heritage Christian Services for nearly 28 years. “As soon as the people we support walk through the door, everything changes. They just make me smile. They have my heart.”

The close-knit team at Nine Mile Point also supports one another like family. From covering shifts and coordinating rides to work to uplifting each other through life’s challenges, they lead with compassion both inside and outside the program. When asked which Heritage Christian Services value best represents the team, Sonja didn’t hesitate. “Every day, they do everything with compassion,” she said. “And they do it with a smile.”

Thank you to the Nine Mile Point team for showing us what it means to be ! 🌟

With the help of the community, we’ve committed to the goal of raising $100,000 in 24 hours to support children, older adults and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Thanks to a matching challenge made possible by the generosity of Heritage Christian’s agency and Foundation board members, along with their friends and families, every donation will be matched, up to $50,000, for double the impact. Every gift makes a difference!

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and we’re excited to spotlight Louis Vaccarelli, a skills coach at Heritage Christian Services!

Louis is a second-generation Korean American and for him, celebrating his heritage is an everyday occurrence. “Because I am half-Korean, I feel like AAPI month is just another month. I celebrate my culture every day through the foods my family and I eat, the language we speak and the overall sense of pride I feel from being Korean,” Louis said.

According to Louis, his mother is the person who has had the biggest impact on his connection to Korean culture. “She’s my hero because she immigrated to America 50 years ago and overcame so much adversity to have a prosperous life in this country,” he said.

For those interested in learning more about South Korean culture, Louis recommends listening to “Arirang,” a traditional Korean folk song about love, loss and longing, which also serves as an unofficial anthem for the nation. Thank you for sharing your heritage, Louis!

Investments made last year in the intellectual and developmental disability community are already making a difference but without continued funding, progress is at risk.

Inclusion of a 4% targeted inflationary increase in this year’s budget is being discussed and your voice is needed to push for the change.

Without a 4% increase, funding will continue to lag behind the actual cost of delivering services, leaving non-profit providers unable to competitively compensate direct support workers, sustain existing programs or meet the growing needs of New Yorkers with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

This week is critical for the New York state budget and the need for a 4% targeted inflationary increase is currently being discussed.

Organizations supporting the intellectual and developmental disabilities community are facing rising costs and staffing shortages amidst growing demand. A 4% targeted inflation increase is needed to competitively compensate direct support workers, sustain existing programs and meet the growing needs of New Yorkers with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Game faces were ON at Dave & Buster's ! 🎮🏀 Our friends spent the day enjoying good eats, sports on the big screen and plenty of games that brought out people's competitive spirits. It was a great reminder of how important it is to relax, laugh and enjoy the company of friends. ❤️

Heritage Christian Services was honored to host Christians of Renewal and Compassion members for the organization’s annual gathering.

Heritage Christian has been a longtime member of the council and credits this fellowship with influences that help shape its Christian identity and mission. Founder and past C.E.O. Bob Pieters also joined the gathering, making the experience especially meaningful for attendees and longtime members alike.

During the first day of the conference, council members enjoyed a tour of Rochester’s historical sites, including the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House and the George Eastman Museum. The second day included presentations on strengthening organizational cultures and building leadership pipelines along with visits to a HCS residential site, Expressive Beginnings Child Care and the Pieters Family Life Center. On the third day, following a business meeting and fellowship, some council members stayed to attended the Heart of Dance performance.

We would like to thank representatives and retirees from Salem Christian Homes, Elim Christian Services, Christian Health, Hope Haven, Inc, Genesis Non-Profit Housing Corporation, Inland Christian Home Inc. and All Belong Center for Inclusive Education for joining us!
