Happy EMS week to all the EMS providers out there. Springfield Fire Department is lucky to have 8 EMT's, 1 EMT Critical Care, and 2 Paramedics. We provide EMS first response to the Town of Springfield as well as the surrounding areas when needed.
Fun Facts about EMS:
It takes between 150 and 180 hours of classroom instruction to become an EMT in New York State. Along with that, EMT's have to pass a skills examine and NYS written exam before they can be certified. To become a Paramedic the classroom time and testing requirements are much more rigorous.
Modern EMS began in the 1950's and really did not become federally standardized until the mid 1960's. Before the 1950's, unregulated agencies at the state and local level set their own standards. Other agencies that provided EMS were fire departments, hospitals, funeral homes, towing companies, and volunteers. During this time transport was the primary focus.
In 1969 Mobile Advanced Life Support debuted in New York City and Miami Florida.
911 was created in 1968 with the first 911 call received in Haleyville Alabama.
