A tragic reminder that known safety issues can’t be ignored or continually pushed down the road. Citizen and Firefighter safety must always be a priority.

The Queensland, Australia Fire Department will plead guilty to a workplace safety breach stemming from the 2023 Slacks Creek warehouse fire that one killed firefighter and seriously injured another. The charge centers on alleged failures involving fireground radio communications, though prosecutors are not alleging those exact failures caused the death or injuries. QFD says it has since implemented 33 recommendations, including expanded self rescue and rapid intervention training. This should serve as a warning to ANY and ALL fire departments that training or equipment deficiencies can have serious consequences, both on and off the fireground. When known issues or gaps are continually ignored and/or allowed, they most certainly put firefighters at risk and expose the department to serious legal implications.

When you delay addressing problems, they don’t disappear they usually become bigger, more expensive, and harder to fix.

Our staffing problem isn’t new. It’s been kicked down the road so many times, it could be in a different municipality by now.

Back in 2021, residents were already telling Springettsbury Township supervisors that our fire department needed additional staffing. Unfortunately, those concerns weren’t addressed then but today, they act like it’s new. While elected officials have a responsibility to address these issues, we also have to acknowledge that our previous fire chief let us down by not pushing to address these staffing problems during his tenure when the warning signs were already there.

More is needed to make sure the citizens are safe and firefighters go home safe!

We don’t just sit around waiting to respond to emergencies.

Between emergencies, our firefighters are constantly training, cleaning and maintaining equipment, apparatus, and stations, conducting pre-plans and inspections, and participating in public education events throughout the community.

Here’s Ladder 89 heading out to one of those community events.

Comments on Surveys and Tax Increases from 8/18/26

Supervisor Dvoryak said, “Let’s put that out to a survey. Let’s ask our residents if they’re willing to pay another 27% in taxes.”

Our response:

Where is the figure of a 27% tax increase coming from?

During a recent strategic-planning process, a survey was conducted in which 50% of participants identified increased staffing as their top priority. In July, we also presented the commissioners with a petition signed by residents from all of the townships expressing support for increased staffing.

The commissioners were shown this information. To date, however, we have not seen any documentation or heard from any resident either in person or on Zoom who has stated that they oppose increased staffing.

Before asking residents whether they are willing to pay “another 27% in taxes,” the basis for that figure should be clearly explained. Any discussion about staffing needs and potential costs should be grounded in accurate data and should acknowledge the input residents have already provided.

Here is another relevant fact about taxes: In 2023, Springettsbury Township supervisors (including Supervisor Dvoryak) approved the 2024 budget with a tax cut.

“Every year we look at our expenses, and all of our directors do an excellent job managing their respective budgets. Revenues have been very good for the township over the past several years,” said Springettsbury Township Manager Hodgkinson in December 2023.

Perhaps YAUFR is doing a good job managing its budget as well.

Attached is the recording from the YAUFR Commission meeting held on August 18, 2026.

The correct facts we’ve been sharing this week, and will continue to share in the coming week, are in response to statements made during this meeting.

Start at the 51-minute mark. This was after the budget was presented and when the heated discussion began.

Addressing comments about YAUFR budget increases

Since the York Area United Fire and Rescue budget presentation on August 18, 2026, we have received additional information through Right-to-Know requests and YAUFR and township meeting minutes. We can now provide the public with factual budget information.

Comments Regarding Budget Increases

Supervisor Dvoryak stated that he received his information from Springettsbury Township’s financial personnel. He said that, over the last five years, budget increases had been “pathetic,”
“It’s not sustainable to keep increasing prices 10% a year for five years now.”

These comments raise the question: Has the budget increased by approximately 50% over the last five years? Because it was unclear whether Supervisor Dvoryak was referring to the entire YAUFR budget or only Springettsbury Township’s share but we reviewed the figures both ways.

YAUFR Budget as a Whole
Over a nine-year period that includes the proposed 2027 budget, the total YAUFR budget increased by:

$3,809,121.63
47.22% overall (Average 5% a year)

Springettsbury Township’s Share
During the same nine-year period, Springettsbury Township’s share of the YAUFR budget increased by:

$1,576,232.42
60.91% overall (Average 6% a year)

These figures do not support the statement that the YAUFR budget increased by 50% during the last five years, nor do they support the claim that the budget increased by 10% per year for five consecutive years during any time.

Also a reminder that YAUFR has always returned money!!
