Welcome to the Official UTRGV Army ROTC Vaqueros Program Page Army ROTC began operation at our University on March 31, 1980 as an extension center of Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M -Kingsville). However, enrollment grew at such an unprecedented rate that the University of Texas-Pan American became a host ROTC institution on October 1, 1981. A host ROTC institution at this university allows access to an Army officer program to students of the Lower Rio Grande Valley from Brownsville to Rio Grande City. Active Duty as well as Retired Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers serve as Cadre for this organization and are responsible for its operation. A Senior Army entitled Professor of Military Science, LTC Gerald Resmondo, heads the Department of Military Science. The department is a subordinate element of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Mission: Vaqueros Battalion: Vaqueros Battalion ROTC program partners with the university to recruit, educate, retain, develop & commission the future leaders of the Army who are adaptive and critical thinkers; motivates young adults to become better citizens. 5th "Apache" Brigade: Commissions officers who are agile, adaptive, critical thinkers ready to lead in a complex environment; develops adaptable cadre capable of providing master level leader development and inspirational instruction; and inspires young students in the JROTC citizenship program to become the future leaders of America. U.S. Army Cadet Command: USACC partners with universities to recruit, educate, develop, and inspire SROTC Cadets in order to commission officers of character for the Total Army; and partners with high schools to conduct JROTC in order to develop citizens of character for a lifetime of commitment and service to our Nation.

“We Win!”
It’s our new UTRGV ROTC espirit de corps campaign. Every time one of our cadets goes above and beyond or excels in any way, the cadet will be recognized in all our social media platforms. Our first “We Win” recognition goes to Cadet Jeremiah Garcia! He has been at Fort Knox for almost two months volunteering his time in support of Summer Camp, as well as, attending Basic Camp. Cadet Garcia returns next week. God Willing, he will take a few weeks off to enjoy some rest and recuperation. He starts the Fall Semester as an MSL2. For Cadet Garcia’s selfless service, we say “We Win!”

The Cadets have four hours to find four key points that are located within the perimeters of the course. Cadets are graded on how may points they located. One point for every location they find. Cadets need at least three of the four to pass the course. Each Cadet was given a tracker to carry with them. The tracker’s purpose is to help the Cadets learn from their mistakes from the course.
