On Sept. 22, 2023, Dr. Malcolm Christopher Cotting became only the eighth honorary graduate in the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School’s history. Cotting is leaving the school after a 13-year stay, but not without leaving a legacy that pushes the envelope of flight test to a new plane – a first-of-its-kind capability for testing autonomous flying with the X-62A Variable In-flight Simulation Test Aircraft.

A continued community partnership! 🇬🇧🇺🇸

Recently, members of the Royal Air Force 17R Squadron were presented with certificates of appreciation from Congreessman Mike Garcia and State Senator Scott Wilk in recognition of their steadfast support for local veterans.

The 17R Squadron is tasked with developmental flight testing of the United Kingdom's F-35B at Edwards.

You can often find them, along with many other active duty members, at Coffee 4 Vets each Tuesday morning at the famous Crazy Otto's diner.

A special message from Col. Douglas Wickert 🦃🍁

Teammates,

The Thanksgiving holiday provides us a moment of reflection to determine what we are most grateful for.

When President Lincoln declared the fourth Thursday of November as a Day of Thanksgiving, our country was deeply divided by a devastating Civil War. Lincoln’s proclamation called upon Americans, despite their divergent ideas and opinions, to give thanks for the many blessings bestowed upon our nation, to reflect upon the losses that paved the way to victories, and to unify by expressing our thanks “with one heart and one voice by the whole American people.”

As we approach this Thanksgiving holiday, I ask you to reflect upon your blessings and to express your thanks to those – in person or in spirit – who have helped you along the way, while joining with friends, family, and community to strengthen the American spirit of unity.

As I reflect upon my time here at Edwards AFB, I realize that since I took command of the 412th Test Wing a little over three months ago, we have initiated testing of two new airframes that will form the backbone of the Air Force for decades to come, along with several other new programs, and our normal workload without missing a beat. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve in such a great community of dedicated professionals capable of handling such an important mission at this critical time in our nation’s history. Each one of you, whether military, civilian, or contractor, plays a role in carrying out that mission, and I am thankful for your hard work and commitment. We at Edwards are a strong community, unified by our vital mission. Let’s all reflect on the successes of the past year and thank the people who made them happen.

However, as we celebrate our accomplishments, let us take time to reflect upon those less fortunate. Thanksgiving is an opportunity for us to take action to share our blessings – to assist the “widows, orphans, mourners, and sufferers” that Lincoln spoke of in his Thanksgiving proclamation.

At this time of year, many families volunteer their time to give others something to be thankful for – a hot meal delivered with a smile, or some warm clothes to lessen the winter chill.

As we give thanks for our health, consider extending that blessing to the ill, the wounded, and those whose loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice to keep us free.

As we give thanks for our homes, consider extending that blessing to those on the streets, in shelters, or living in temporary housing in foreign lands, far from their loved ones.

As we enjoy our Thanksgiving meal, consider extending that blessing to the hungry and to those on duty for our protection.

As we hug our family and friends, consider extending that blessing to our fellow Airmen separated from their loved ones by duty or circumstances.

This Thanksgiving, make it your mission to reflect on your blessings, express your gratitude, and join with others to increase the spirit of unity.

Have a safe, meaningful, and joyful Thanksgiving.

R,

Col Wickert

Team Edwards pushed the limit last year to raise $100K. In CFC23 this year, we are aiming for $103,500. This is a goal we will achieve together!

✔️Give through payroll deduction for a greater impact over time.

✔️Give to multiple charities and pledge volunteer hours in one place.

✔️Give for greater impact – the world is a better place when we give together.

✔️GIVE HAPPY! Studies show that when you give happiness, you get happy too.

11/10/2023

🇺🇸 A special message from 412th Test Wing Commander, Col. Douglas Wickert:

Teammates,

This Saturday is Veterans Day, a time to recognize and express gratitude to our military veterans. It's also an opportunity to reflect on the broader implications of service of all kinds. Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day and intended to commemorate the end of hostilities in World War I--the "War to end all Wars"--on the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month in 1918. After WW II, Veterans Day was expanded to recognize the veterans of both World Wars and we now pay tribute to all veterans of all wars.

From the trenches of Europe to the jungles of the Pacific, to the frozen Arctic, to the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan… on Veterans Day, we remember the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Coast Guard, and Space Force Guardians who faced the challenges of military service and, for too many, the horrors of war.

Veterans Day should never be just another day off from work. It is a day of profound importance. It is a day to remember the sacrifices of veterans and their families. It is a day to rededicate ourselves to the values and principles for which they served. It is a day to remember that war is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. As we enter an era of Great Power competition, it is a day to remember the importance of the work you are doing each and every day at Edwards AFB to prepare our Air Force and Space Force.

Armistice Day did not "end all wars" as it was hoped… "If you want peace, prepare for war." Our best hope to prevent the next war and promote continued global peace and prosperity is in the advanced capabilities that each of you play a role in helping develop, test, evaluate, and deliver to the warfighter. Whether you are executing a test or providing the installation support that makes T&E possible, you have a vital role to our nation.

On Saturday we come together as a nation, united in respect and appreciation for veterans who have dedicated themselves to the cause of freedom. As we celebrate Veterans Day, let us rekindle our commitment to the principles of our great nation. I am deeply impressed by the dedication of the military and civilian Airmen at Edwards AFB, committed to ensuring our defense, security, and freedom. The peace and future prosperity of our Nation rest on the work you are doing to develop and deliver the Air Force and Space Force of the future. I am incredibly proud to serve with you.

With the federal holiday and resiliency day, I also ask that you carefully evaluate all risks and activities as you rest and reflect this weekend. Enjoy the long weekend and come back safe and recharged as we have important work to do. I also want to extend my highest appreciation and best wishes to all our 412 TW Airmen deployed around the world.

Thank you for everything you do!

Facilitating key partnerships with industry is something we are famous for. Check out one of the latest collaborations!

Edwards Air Force Base has long served as a cornerstone for aerospace innovation. Recently, the base's 412th Maintenance Group hosted Exosonic, an aerospace startup, to collaborate on the development of a Next Generation Aerial Target under a Small Business Innovation Research contract.
"The amount of data we could gather was invaluable," said Tie Norris, CEO of Exosonic, highlighting the significance of the visit to Edwards AFB. The Exosonic design team was particularly interested in evaluating existing aircraft platforms, mainly the F-16 and T-38, to incorporate their systems such as landing gear and external surface flight controls into the new Next Generation Aerial Target (NGAT) design. The sun climbs above a ridgeline in the western Mojave Desert, where a female Mojave desert tortoise emerges from her burrow. Blinking in the bright daylight, she basks in the warmth. She has seen thousands of sunrises in her more than 50 years of life, and she’s also been a witness to many changes during that time. The tortoise population at Edwards has truly seen it all 👀.

Working closely with partners at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Survey, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Edwards Air Force Base and others, the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Desert Tortoise Recovery Program is focused on reducing threats by raising juvenile tortoises in protected conditions during their most vulnerable life stage- hatching!

What do the planets Mars and Venus have in common with Edwards AFB? Yardangs!

Yardangs are sharp irregular ridges of compact sand lying in the direction of the prevailing wind in exposed desert regions, formed by the wind erosion of adjacent material that is less resistant and they hold a special interest for astrogeologists who study similar formations on Mars and Venus.

Earlier this week, astrogeologist Dr. Martha Gilmore from Wesleyan University visited the yardangs on Edwards to collect samples that will help scientists further understand these natural formations and their occurrences on Earth and extraterrestrial planets.
