Soldiers from 2nd Squadron, 13th Cavalry Regiment recently completed their 2023 spur ride. Earning your spurs is a time honored tradition that continues to live on in the cavalry. Soldiers must pass a series of physical and mental tests relevant to the cavalry, including a 12-mile road march. After successful completion, Soldiers are inducted into the Order of the Spur.

The spur ride is a test of both physical and mental toughness. Soldiers must be able to endure long hours of physical exertion, while also maintaining their mental focus. The tests are designed to simulate the challenges that Soldiers face in combat.

The spur ride is also a testament of teamwork and camaraderie. Soldiers must work together to complete the tests, and they must support each other through the challenges. It is a rite of passage for cavalry soldiers, and it is a source of great pride for those who earned their spurs.

Congratulations to the 2nd Squadron, 13th Cavalry Regiment on completing their 2023 spur ride! We are proud of your accomplishments, and look forward to seeing what you will accomplish in the future.

“The words of President Ronald Reagan still ring true today. ‘Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in our bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed down for them to do the same.’

May we always have the honor and remember those who have paid the ultimate price. May their memory be a guiding light that inspires us to live with purpose, integrity, and gratitude. And, may we forever strive to be worthy of their sacrifice.” - Col. Matthew Adamczyk, commander, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division

Today, America’s Tank Division participated with the City of El Paso, Gold Star Families, friends, and neighbors in support of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Fort Bliss National Cemetery Memorial Day wreath-laying ceremony honoring our fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice. 🇺🇸

On 24-26 May, 77 members of HQ 1AD conducted a 36-hour Staff Ride to Gettysburg battlefield to study command and the principles of war through the lens of the 1863 Civil War battlefield site and President Lincoln’s historic Gettysburg address. Members of Headquarters, 1st Armored Division deployed from Fort Bliss, Texas, to Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania, in support of Warfighter 23-5, and found the time to conduct a 36-hour Staff Ride to the historic Gettysburg Battlefield Site. Attendees ranged from private to brigadier general and studied the battlefield, examining command and the Principles of War. For many of the team, this was their first visit to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, with the Staff Ride culminating in the most junior soldiers reading President Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg address aloud to the broader group. In America’s Tank Division, it proves you can have fun while learning about the extraordinary history of our Army. It really is !

Maj. Gen. Carlton Smith, Texas National Guard 71st Troop Command's commanding general, made his first visit to Fort Bliss as commander to check on training and his troops from the Main Command Post – Operational Detachment (MCP-OD) supporting 1AD's Warfighter Exercise 23-04.

The 1st AD MCP-OD is a Texas Army National Guard unit assigned to the 1st Armored Division’s Headquarters.

The main mission of the 1st AD MCP-OD, as an embedded National Guard unit, is complete integration into 1st AD HQ and staff, where they represent 15% of the division staff.

During Warfighter, Soldiers from the MCP-OD trained alongside their active duty counterparts providing a hands-on and collaborative experience that built trust and cohesion. Some National Guard Soldiers only have the opportunity to train in their MOS during periods of activation. The MCP-OD offers a practical way for both components to partner before being called into a deployment together. By enabling National Guard Soldiers to train with active duty, the 1st AD and MCP-OD are forging a continued partnership that ensures they remain trained and ready to answer the nation’s call.
