Mental Performance Quick Tip: Challenge V. Threat

In pressure situations (first date, first day at a new school/job, promotion boards, interviews etc.), confidence can dwindle quickly, making it difficult to perform at your best. This is because when pressure situations are perceived as a THREAT, self-talk can start to become unproductive. At the same time, the body is unable to decipher between real or an imagined threat, so it activates stress responses (sweaty palms, increased heart rate, rapid breathing, etc.).

However, if the same pressure situation is perceived as a CHALLENGE, it is easier to silence unproductive self-talk with thoughts of growth, confidence, and opportunity as well as perceive physical stress responses in the body as a product of excitement rather than fear.

Reinterpret your perception of a pressure situation as a CHALLENGE instead of a THREAT. Rather than thinking about what could go wrong, think about all of the opportunities the situation can provide. How exciting!

Next up for our cognitive biases: the Confirmation Bias.

The Confirmation Bias is a way our brain filters information that causes us to notice, remember, and weigh information that supports our beliefs while at the EXACT SAME TIME not noticing, not remembering, and not weighing information that goes against our beliefs. The stronger the belief, the stronger the confirmation bias works on that belief.

This can be especially problematic when it comes to problem solving - if we're only able to see evidence or information that supports our beliefs, we're potentially missing out on various factors that could allow us to effectively solve that problem.

How have you seen the confirmation bias play out in your work?

Self-awareness is one of the competencies of resilience. You can help build resilience by being more aware of your productive and counterproductive thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

One aspect we can bring awareness to is our defense mechanisms or the strategies we use to reduce unwanted feelings. Take a look at the image below to learn more about two common defense mechanisms. Bring awareness to how you usually respond with defense mechanisms and your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors from that response. Contact the R2 Performance Center for more information on strategies to help counter defense mechanisms!

09/09/2020

When we set out to achieve our goals, most of us make a plan and think if we follow these steps exactly the journey will be smooth. In reality, things do not always go as planned. We will most likely encounter obstacles along the way - twists and turns, roadblocks and setbacks - that may make us feel like we’re going backwards rather than progressing toward our goal. It’s important when planning for a goal to consider the obstacles you may face ahead of time and prepare for them in advance.

To learn more about a unique goal setting model that prepares you for such disruptions, contact the R2 Performance Center.

Our brains, like our lives, are in a constant state of change. Dr. Richard Davidson talks about four challenges that we as a society are facing today and why it seems so difficult to take control of our brains. Have you ever day-dreamed about the future you have always wanted? Although day dreaming may happen when you are bored, it is very similar to the skill of mental imagery. Imagery allows you to practice, experience, or relive things within your life. As it turns out, when you are visualizing things in your head your brain does not know the difference between reality and imagination. Learning how to practice visualization/imagery can help in accomplishing things that at one time, may have seemed like just a dream!

If you would like to learn more about visualization, please reach out to the Fort Bliss R2 Performance Center @[email protected].
