Today marks the start of Spring Break for many, don't ruin it and #PlanWhileYouCan.
During Spring Break 2019, there were 444 crashes involving young drivers under the influence of alcohol. Those crashes killed 11 people and seriously injured 37 others.

In Texas, it is illegal for anyone under 21 to consume alcohol. The state's legal limit for intoxication is .08 blood or breath alcohol concentration (BAC). Law enforcement officers can arrest drivers having a BAC below .08. with probable cause based on the driver’s behavior. Drivers under the influence of alcohol may face up to $17,000 in fines and fees, jail time and could lose their license.

If you've driven on Mesa in West El Paso recently, you know construction in the area is causing delays. Crews still have much work to complete. If you need to travel in the area, increase your travel time or use I-10 to get around the project.

On this #WorldEngineeringDay we do a #ThrowbackThursday to last week’s #GirlDay - “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” that was part of #NationalEngineersWeek. We partnered with UTEP - The University of Texas at El Paso and El Paso Electric to inspire future engineers and reminded girls “Engineering? Mija, Yes you can‼️

o Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
o In Texas in 2019, 41% of teens killed in crashes were not wearing a seat belt (109 of 266). A simple click may have prevented these tragedies.

02/13/2021

Drivers in the El Paso District are being encouraged to take extra precautions this weekend if they need to travel, as a strong winter storm may impact roadways across the state.

Maintenance crews across the District’s six counties started pretreating roadways early Thursday morning with brine, a calculated salt/water solution sprayed ahead of a storm’s expected arrival. The solution leaves behind the familiar white lines many drivers are used to seeing.

Crews will monitor conditions over the weekend and into next week and are ready to treat roads as needed with additional brine, sand/salt and snow plows.

Information on road conditions in the state is available at www.drivetexas.org or by phone at (800) 452-9292. Drivers can also monitor conditions by visiting www.txdot.gov and searching “El Paso Cameras”.

Driving Tips
• Slow down. Speed limits are based on normal road and weather conditions, not winter road conditions.
• Maintain at least three times the normal following distance on snow or ice.
• Watch carefully for snow removal equipment and stay at least 200 feet behind snow plows.
• Use extra caution on bridges, ramps, overpasses and shaded areas as they tend to freeze first.
If your vehicle starts to slide, ease off the gas pedal or brakes. Steer into the direction of the skid until you have regained traction. Then straighten your vehicle.

Pretreating Activities February 11, 2021

From Alpine to El Paso, our Texas Department of Transportation maintenance crews are gearing up for the potential of wintery weather. ❄️💦
They loaded up tankers with brine and started pretreating roadways this morning. 👷🏻‍♂️🛣
Please watch for crews and give them space.
