Private First Class Christian Sutton, from Sumter, South Carolina, is part of Charlie Company, 40th Brigade Engineer Battalion, .
When Operation Allies Welcome started off, his focus was on the mission in front of him. A chance encounter while supporting have changed his goals though. He now wants to be an Army Interpreter (09L).
"I met an Afghan man who had an English University in Kabul," PFC Sutton shared. "While here, he started helping me learn Dari."
The gentleman began creating small practices lessons, using his prior experience to give PFC Sutton a series of language challenges. This wasn't enough for the Battering Ram Soldier, who decided to start using some of his downtime to sit down with the teacher, practicing and taking notes.
"My leadership has been incredibly encouraging, giving me the time to practice." He went on to read some of the words on a poster in Doña Ana Village, showing how his skills have steadily been improving.
PFC Sutton said that he had taken the Defense Language Aptitude Battery (DLAB) before and hadn't done well, but he hadn't actually been serious about it. Now, he looks forward to attempting the test again, saying that his lessons have expanded his perspective on other languages.

Soldiers from the 40th Brigade Engineer Battalion deployed the Army's newest assault bridge and maintained the training lanes near Orogrande, N.M., in support of 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division's recent brigade exercise.
Fort Bliss is home to the largest training area in the United States - larger than the National Training Center/Fort Irwin and JRTC and Fort Polk . With over 965,000 acres, it is also larger than all of the training areas of U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hood and Fort Riley combined.

Instructors from U.S. Army Fort Leonard Wood Maneuver Support Center of Excellence (MSCOE) came to the field during this eight-day training period, helping the build their proficiency on the new JAB system. They conducted in-depth training, simulating a variety of conditions under which the Battering Rams had to operate.
The training culminated with certified crews that increased the mobility, readiness, and lethality of our Brigade.
Special thanks to the NCO's from FLW for their support as we implement this new capability.

Specialist Caleb Bruckner (from Lancaster, South Carolina) and Private First Class Roxanna Rodriguez (from Stephenville, Texas) from 40th Brigade Engineer Battalion were recognized last week for their exemplary response to a difficult situation.
They received a call from a spouse that something was wrong with their teammate. They called their leadership and headed over to the service member's home. There, they found the soldier considering su***de. They talked calmly with said soldier until their company command team arrived. Once they were there, PFC Rodriguez turned her attention to supporting the spouse, helping her to remain calm while SPC Bruckner remained with the soldier.
The Brigade Commander, Colonel Michael Wagner, told them, "We train to take care of each other. We fight and win as a team. The only way to do that is to look out for each other. You've clearly been paying attention, helping to set an example of what 'right' looks like."
It's Soldiers like PFC Rodriguez and SPC Bruckner who maintained their composure in a tense situation and made proactive choices that ensures we take care of our battle buddies, even in the tough times.

The goal was simple, work as a team to complete large numbers of various athletic movements, from push-ups to air squats to burpees. There were even team Deadlift and Sled drag events.
The morning competition ended with a technique and accuracy 'ball' throw event.
The Command Team, LTC Fairel and CSM Rivera, were on hand to encourage and help Soldiers as they pushed themselves and their Company teammates in their events.
While Delta Company won overall, everyone had fun and got some solid PT in.
The Criteria includes four critical areas:
1. Military Intelligence Performance
2. Training Efficiency
3. Marksmanship
4. Physical Fitness
D CO's accomplishments included a CENTCOM deployment, support to Operation Allies Welcome (OAW), and an exemplary military intelligence training record throughout the year.
Exemplary performance all around from our MICO team!
40th Brigade Engineer Battalion is one of the teams out there with them, helping maintain their vehicles!
Sergeant Matthew Renn is from Goldsboro, North Carolina, and has been maintaining Bradleys. He told us that keeping them up and running is essential.
When asked if he likes what he does, his answer was, "Most of the time. It can be frustrating when things break, but I know folks depend on me. I'm not going to let them down." He then proceeded to give me a thumbs-up, turned up some music as he called for a particular tool, and got right back to work.
PFC Cyrena Limage-Braham, an Intelligence Analyst (35F) with Delta Company, 40th Brigade Engineer Battalion was born and raised in Queens, NYC, and grew up embracing her parents’ Haitian upbringing. Foods she connects with include rice, baked macaroni and cheese, fish, chicken, pork, vegetables, and fruit.
PFC Limage-Braham states that it can be difficult incorporating her Haitian food traditions in a healthy lifestyle. “A lot of the food is made with oil, is fried, or is made with a lot of salt. My favorite dish is called Diri Djon Djon (black rice). The dish can be very unhealthy because of the high oil and salt content.” She recommends learning how to cook traditional foods at home so you have more control over ingredients and the sodium and fat content.
“The way I incorporate the traditional foods into my life is by including more vegetables (steamed, sautéed, or baked), using less oil, and by watching how much salt I use.” She also points out the importance of enjoying traditional foods and maintaining balance in one’s diet. “Even though Fried Pork (griot) is delicious, it is unhealthy especially since fried fat is my favorite part of the dish. I will eat it a few times a year during special occasions. Making sure I balance my eating habits is something I have been working on for 20+ years.”
While we watch world events carefully, our focus remains on our current training mission and improving our overall readiness. There is no change to our mission at this time. We will continue to increase our Soldier's proficiency on their assigned weapons platforms over the coming months.
