Opinion: Abandoning the arena would be abandoning voter input

After the El Paso Chamber sent out a survey to our membership, we received a significant amount of responses and calls encouraging the Chamber to not only advocate for the Multipurpose Performing Arts and Entertainment Center, but to hold our City Council accountable to the economic development investment approved by voters. With this said, the El Paso Chamber has been meeting with the Downtown Management District, business leaders, and other organizations to advocate for the development of the Multipurpose Performing Arts and Entertainment Center in downtown El Paso as City Council is set to discuss reevaluating and repurposing plans for the project during their upcoming meeting on January 3, 2023.

Click the link below to read more about what the El Paso Chamber’s President and CEO has to say regarding the upcoming agenda item. To learn more about how you can help express your opposition to abandoning the project, email: [email protected]

Community buy-in and support are needed before City Council votes on the future of the Downtown arena.

December 9th is National Salesperson Day! We’re celebrating our very own EPC sales team! Ariadna Baylon is our New Member Sales Rep. She always brings a smile to our faces with her friendly personality, and we are grateful for her hard-working commitment to the Chamber and its goals! Read on as she takes us through her experience in sales!

How long have you been in sales?
19 years.

What is your favorite part about being in sales?
From a very young age, I realized how gratifying it was to use my sales skills to help people. I'm passionate about relationship-building and customer service!

Your top three best practices that can help raise the bar for sales performance.

1. To be successful in sales, you have to be skilled at creating a one-on-one connection.

2. Curiosity is one of the best traits that a salesperson can possess. It gives you the benefit of learning from clients and prospects and is a good discoverer of needs. Taking care of your clients and prospects requires the curiosity to understand why things are done a certain way one time and different ways another time.

3. One of the things I find most rewarding in sales is when I talk with a customer after I've sold them a product or service, and they can point to positive results. Of course, my primary goal as a salesperson is always to land the deal, but really, I'm in it because I believe the products or services I sell can improve people's lives and make companies and organizations run more efficiently.

December 9th is National Salesperson Day! We’re celebrating our very own EPC sales team today! Gladys Gonzalez is our Director of Membership. Gladys always brings a colorful point of view to our team, and we appreciate her charisma and dedication. Read on as she takes us through her experience in sales!

How long have you been in sales?
I’ve been in sales for 13 years. Lucky 13!

What is your favorite part about being in sales?
I love everything about being in sales! But I would have to say that the thing that drives me and makes me want to go to work every day is the chance that this gives me to connect with people and their needs, and to be able to help them find a solution. I believe that to be successful in sales you truly have to have a passion for what you do, and truly care about being of service to those who are trusting you with their needs. I’m still working with people who I worked with 13 years ago, and they still trust me with their business, and I attribute that to the true care I have for the success of their business and for them as individuals.

Your top three best practices that can help raise the bar for sales performance.
Number one, trust. Comply with your promises and do it within the time frame promised. If something changed, keep your customer informed of the changes and don’t leave them waiting for your response. This also means being honest about what you know and don’t know. We can tell when someone is not being honest, so don’t be that person. We don’t always have all the answers, and the best practice in that case is to be honest and say you don’t know, so instead ask them to give you a chance to get this information for them, and do it within the time frame promised.
Number two, nobody likes to be sold, but we all love to buy! Take time to find out what your customer’s needs are and find a solution that truly fits their needs. This will make or break a deal and it will affect the lifetime of your relationship with this customer. The last thing you want is for them to regret their investment in your product and lose them in the long run.
Last, never stop learning. If you want to be the best in the game, you have to practice every day. This can be role-playing, listening to podcasts, reading… One thing that a lot of salespeople have in common is a huge ego. We think that because we have been in sales for 5, 10, 20 years that we know it all, but the reality is that things are always evolving, and your education shouldn’t be the exception. Imagine if Tom Brady only showed up to the games and didn’t practice? I guarantee you that he wouldn’t have half of the success he does now. It’s the same thing with sales. Practice, stay hydrated, and eat clean every day so that when you show up to your game (sales appointment), you’ll be ready to win the game.
