This is the poem In Flanders Field - I would read this each year at the Veterans Business Association Memorial Day Celebration where we would honor those fallen and those that have left us during the past year. Sadly, there has not been a celebration again this year.

On this Memorial Day - please pause for a moment at 3 pm- and remember.

In Flanders Fields
John McCrae - 1872-1918

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

John McCrae was born on November 30, 1872. A Canadian doctor and teacher who served in World War I, he is best known for his memorial poem “In Flanders Fields.” He died on January 28, 1918.

War Stories from a Cold War Warrior

On this Memorial Day Weekend, we pause to remember. I remember. The Veterans Business Association was not able to have their traditional Memorial Day Celebration last year due to the pandemmic. Again, this year, large gatherings are being discouraged and many venues have not yet reopened.

As a way of remembrance, here is a link to an article that I wrote several years agao about the soldiers that died during my career - some of you may have your own stories - for me, I remember:

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/war-stories-from-cold-warrior-h-w-bill-sparks/

There is a book by the title We Were Soldiers Once that tells the story of battles in the early days of Vietnam. Every soldier has war stories.

So, I was asked to find an electrician in El Paso for a job in the northeast - amazingly, a search of SAM and the SBA data bases showed few active Veteran Owned Small Businesses (VOSB's). Business owners that complain that they cannot get help for their business and yet they do not register their business on the most important data bases are missing out. If you want to expand your business in a down economy, you MUST stand up and step forward to be seen and heard. I remember. These are my thoughts, reflecting on the meaning of Memorial Day.
I have been working with homeless Veterans and Veterans in need for some time now. Holidays are always a stressful time for many people - the happiness enjoyed by others may not come into the lives of the homeless or our less fortunate friends and neighbors. The best way that we can help others in need is to BE THERE - do a "buddy" check - call a friend or family member that you have not spoken to in a while and bring along a smile for them - let them know that you care about them - it is well and good to memorialize the loss of those that gave all for the freedoms that we enjoy today but let us not forget that there are many Veterans, too many Veterans, that struggle every day just to survive - BUDDY CHECK - I am ok - how are YOU?
Today marks the beginning of a millennia old tradition - the lighting of the first candle in celebration of the Festival if Lights known as Hunukkah - in the spirit of the holiday season I wish for my Jewish friends: May this Festival of Lights bring blessing upon you and all of your loved ones for Happiness and Health. Shalom!
Tis the season - winter solstice - Hanukkah - Christmas - renewal of the soul and nature - From my house to your house - may you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday season.
It is such a sad and tragic event that has happened. A family is mourning the loss of Jose Manuel Clemente and his daughter who were killed in Monday's 25-vehicle crash near Lordsburg. Please consider helping Mrs. Clemente and her son as they must begin preparations to lay to rest their loved ones. This GoFund Account will assist with immediate funeral expenses, and future medical expenses for the 3 El Paso survivors. You can comment without donating! Please share the family's campaign to assist the surviving members of this tragic accident.
